{"id":15103,"date":"2020-08-24T20:36:49","date_gmt":"2020-08-24T20:36:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/08\/24\/dejoy-tells-lawmakers-that-trump-attacks-on-mail-in-ballots-not-helpful\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:32:53","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:32:53","slug":"dejoy-tells-lawmakers-that-trump-attacks-on-mail-in-ballots-not-helpful","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2020\/08\/24\/dejoy-tells-lawmakers-that-trump-attacks-on-mail-in-ballots-not-helpful\/","title":{"rendered":"DeJoy tells lawmakers that Trump attacks on mail-in ballots \u2018not helpful\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Postmaster General Louis DeJoy told lawmakers Monday that he has warned allies of President Donald Trump that the president\u2019s repeated attacks on mail-in ballots are \u201cnot helpful,\u201d but denied that recent changes at the Postal Service are linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2020\/08\/09\/postal-service-emerges-as-flash-point-heading-into-election\/\" target=_blank>the November elections<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy was testifying for a second day on Capitol Hill, facing tense questions from lawmakers over an uproar in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2020\/08\/18\/post-office-machine-removals-spark-election-concerns-suit\/\" target=_blank>mail delivery delays<\/a> since he took the helm in mid-June. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am not engaged in sabotaging the election,\u201d DeJoy said, adding that, like Trump, he personally plans to vote by mail. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hearing quickly became a debate over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2020\/08\/19\/postal-service-halts-some-changes-amid-outcry-lawsuits\/\" target=_blank>mail delivery disruptions<\/a> being reported nationwide. Democrats said the changes under DeJoy\u2019s watch are causing widespread delays, but Republicans dismissed the worries as unfounded and part of a Democratic \u201cconspiracy\u201d against Trump.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In questioning, Rep. Stephen Lynch, D-Mass., said the upheaval at one of the nation\u2019s oldest and most popular institutions was either the result of \u201cgross incompetence\u201d or that DeJoy was \u201cdoing this on purpose.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat the heck are you doing?\u201d Lynch asked DeJoy at a sometimes contentious House Oversight Committee hearing. DeJoy, who has called election mail his \u201cNo. 1 priority,\u201d said he will authorize expanded use of overtime, extra truck trips and other measures in the weeks before the election to ensure on-time delivery of ballots.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy urged voters to request mail-in ballots at least 15 days before the Nov. 3 election so they have enough time to receive their ballot, complete it and mail it back to elections officials on time. (Tom Williams\/Pool via AP)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy\u2019s comments came as the oversight panel opened a hearing on operational changes at the Postal Service that have resulted in mail delays nationwide. The House approved legislation Saturday to reverse the changes and send $25 billion to shore up the agency ahead of the November election. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the chair of the oversight committee and author of the House bill, said DeJoy was using the Postal Service\u2019s longstanding fiscal problems as an excuse \u201cto justify sweeping and damaging changes to Postal Service operations. And we have all seen the results: national headlines about delays of days and weeks, veterans desperately waiting for their medications, sorting machines being ripped out and thrown in dumpsters.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maloney\u2019s committee on Saturday released internal Postal Service documents warning about steep declines and delays in a range of mail services since early July, shortly after DeJoy took the helm. Delays have occurred in first-class and marketing mail, periodicals and Priority Mail, the agency says in an Aug. 12 briefing prepared by Postal Service staff for DeJoy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThese new documents show that the delays we have all heard about are actually far worse than previously reported,\u2019&#8217; Maloney said. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy acknowledged at a Senate hearing last week that there has been a \u201cdip\u201d in service, but disputed reports of widespread problems.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At one point, Rep. Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., questioned DeJoy\u2019s role as a fundraiser for Trump\u2019s 2016 election leading to a heated exchange. Cooper pointedly reminded DeJoy that it\u2019s a felony to delay delivery of the mail.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy said he\u2019s in \u201cfull compliance\u201d with ethics rules and resents the line of questions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. John Sarbanes, D-Md., told DeJoy flatly that he does not trust him. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans took the opposite approach, repeatedly apologizing to DeJoy for the harsh questions and dismissing the mail delivery delays as a conspiracy theory. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou\u2019re getting a berating up here,\u201d Rep. Ralph Norman, R-S.C., told DeJoy.  <\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2020\/08\/13\/trump-opposes-postal-money-that-would-help-vote-by-mail\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP20225833340598.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump opposes postal money that would help vote-by-mail<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Trump has moved to sow public distrust in the Postal Service&#039;s ability to deliver what is expected to be record numbers of mail-in ballots.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Postal Service landed in the middle of election-year tensions after Trump, during an interview on Fox News, acknowledged he\u2019s blocking emergency funds to the Postal Service to make it harder to process an expected surge of mail-in ballots. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Because of the COVID-19 crisis, millions of Americans are expected to avoid polling places and try to cast their ballots by mail.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy, a wealthy Republican donor, owned a logistics business that was a longtime Postal Service contractor, and he has significant financial stakes in companies that do business or compete with the agency. DeJoy said Monday he is in \u201cfull compliance\u201d with ethics rules and said his actions as postmaster were just \u201ca plan to run trucks on time.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement Sunday, the Postal Service said it was concerned that the House bill, \u201cwhile well meaning, will constrain the ability of the Postal Service to make operational changes that will improve efficiency, reduce costs and ultimately improve service to the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Speaker Nancy Pelosi recalled lawmakers to Washington for a rare Saturday session over objections from Republicans, who dismissed it as a stunt. Trump urged a no vote, railing on Twitter against mail-in ballots expected to surge in the COVID-19 crisis.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House chief of staff Mark Meadows called the House bill a \u201cpolitical statement,\u201d stressing that Trump would consider additional money only as part of a broader coronavirus relief package. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., has been eyeing a $10 billion postal rescue as part of the next COVID-19 relief package, but said the Senate won\u2019t pass stand-alone legislation for the Postal Service without additonal measurres to address the coronavirus crisis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pelosi called White House proposals to deal with the pandemic \u201cbare leaves,\u201d saying they don\u2019t address children facing food insecurity, people grappling with evictions, coronavirus testing and treatment or money for state and local governments. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Twenty-six House Republicans broke with Trump and GOP leaders to back the House bill, which passed 257-150.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
