{"id":16452,"date":"2020-07-23T21:01:53","date_gmt":"2020-07-23T21:01:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2020\/07\/23\/pentagon-explores-what-telework-capabilities-to-make-permanent\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T17:59:11","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T17:59:11","slug":"pentagon-explores-what-telework-capabilities-to-make-permanent","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2020\/07\/23\/pentagon-explores-what-telework-capabilities-to-make-permanent\/","title":{"rendered":"Pentagon explores what telework capabilities to make permanent"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 The U.S. Defense Department\u2019s IT shop is weighing what telework infrastructure and policies <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2020\/04\/16\/how-dod-expanded-its-networks-to-beat-the-telework-spike\/\" target=_blank>implemented in response to the coronavirus pandemic<\/a> could remain in place when the crisis ends, a top IT official said July 22.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere\u2019s programs in work now to try and make permanent some of what we authorized going forward,\u201d Peter Ranks, deputy chief information officer for information enterprise, said on a webinar hosted by the Intelligence and National Security Alliance. INSA is a trade association dedicated to driving public-private partnerships to advance intelligence and national security priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ranks also noted that productivity hasn\u2019t suffered since employees began working from home en masse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In March, during the early days of telework, the Department of Defense rapidly rolled out its Commercial Virtual Remote Environment, a collaboration platform that quickly added 900,000 DoD users. Now, as leaders across government and industry discuss what the future of work looks like after the COVID-19 pandemic subsides, the DoD could make permanent several tools and polices that it created to address mass telework.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One capability that department leadership particularly likes is the ability to collaborate across the entirety of the department, regardless of organization, Ranks said. Leaders would also like to maintain the next layer of that capability, allowing employees to collaborate across the department from outside the Pentagon\u2019s network perimeter \u2014 a decision that Ranks said \u201cis really going to accelerate the conversation about zero-trust within the department.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A long-term goal, he added, was to add more personal devices for employees to access unclassified data, he said. He added that providing the IT tools alone wouldn\u2019t be enough to make the changes permanent, saying that department leaders will have to accept the \u201cnew normal\u201d of an increasingly remote workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need that continued leadership commitment to a new normal that\u2019s going to be a little bit more flexible environment for our workers,\u201d Ranks said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Remote access to classified information has also been an issue during the pandemic. Last month, Army chief information officer\/G-6 Lt. Gen. Bruce Crawford said the service is rolling out a platform for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/2020\/06\/22\/the-army-will-soon-allow-users-to-access-classified-info-from-home\/\" target=_blank>remote access to secret information for 2,000 users<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much like the Army, Ranks said, that access must be \u201cconditioned\u201d to a certain sensitivity level and be dependent on the job of the employee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s a question with which the Office of the Director of National Intelligence is also wrestling. La\u2019Naia Jones, acting chief information officer of the intelligence community, said that for intel agenices, remote access is \u201cnot really a cut and dry question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re looking at it as, what can we do within that classified data and information, what makes it classified. And are there elements, parts, pieces or processes that we can do on a lower classified domain that can mitigate that?\u201d Jones said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some
