{"id":17052,"date":"2015-12-11T20:17:58","date_gmt":"2015-12-11T20:17:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/12\/11\/opm-still-searching-for-7-percent-of-breach-victims\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:44:34","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:44:34","slug":"opm-still-searching-for-7-percent-of-breach-victims","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2015\/12\/11\/opm-still-searching-for-7-percent-of-breach-victims\/","title":{"rendered":"OPM still searching for 7 percent of breach victims"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Office of Personnel Management has been sending some 800,000 letters a day since Sept. 30, alerting current, former and prospective federal employees and family members that their information was compromised in a network breach last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That initial effort wrapped up on Dec. 11 with about 93 percent of notifications sent through traditional mail.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OPM is encouraging people who think they might have been affected by the breach but failed to receive a letter to reach out through a <a href=\"https:\/\/opmverify.dmdc.osd.mil\/\" target=\"_blank\">new online portal<\/a>, launched on Dec. 1 with support from the Department of Defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Affected persons who received a letter and lost their PIN can also use the portal to obtain a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letters outline the known timeline of events and how those affected can get credit monitoring and fraud protections for the next three years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also, to avoid potential fraud, OPM urged recipients to compare their letters to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/cybersecurity\">ones posted on the agency&#8217;s website<\/a> to ensure authenticity.
