{"id":17193,"date":"2017-11-30T13:34:02","date_gmt":"2017-11-30T13:34:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/11\/30\/are-us-leaders-dropping-the-ball-on-cybersecurity\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:45:58","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:45:58","slug":"are-us-leaders-dropping-the-ball-on-cybersecurity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/smr\/cybercon\/2017\/11\/30\/are-us-leaders-dropping-the-ball-on-cybersecurity\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Congress dropping the ball on cybersecurity?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. leaders must establish new ways to boost cybersecurity, but the onus of defending against campaigns such as the one presumably run by Russia to influence the 2016 presidential election may fall to federal agencies and U.S. citizens if Congress and senior officials can\u2019t get the job done, according to one congressman.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn the same way that we are now better at our diets and sorting out junk food, and better at pollution and keeping our environment clean, we\u2019re going to have to learn new skills of keeping the pollution and junk food\u201d out of cybersecurity, Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse said Nov. 28 at the CyberCon 2017 conference in Arlington, Virginia..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much of the work in improving cybersecurity across the country lies in the hands of the American people and federal agencies, he added, noting that the U.S. can\u2019t necessarily rely on lawmakers or top leaders to get the job done. It\u2019s particularly pressing as the U.S. faces emerging threats online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have seen in the last election, and we\u2019re going to continue to see \u2026 a melding of cyber hacking and weaponized fake news that is used to manipulate American public opinion to the advantage of foreign antagonists \u2014 that is a fairly new phenomenon,\u201d Whitehouse said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe cyber part is not that complicated; hacking the [Democratic National Committee] was an afternoon\u2019s work for somebody. But the strategy of using that information and running through a weaponized fake news matrix in order to get information out selectively and affect American public opinion isn\u2019t going away.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whitehouse highlighted <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/smr\/cybercon\/2017\/11\/28\/3-ways-congress-can-help-boost-cybersecurity\/\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">a range a potential ways<\/a> Capitol Hill lawmakers and U.S. officials could boost federal cybersecurity, including an inspector general-type role that monitors federal agencies and their network security. He added that a \u201croving IG for cyber\u201d could become an office that serves as a resume-booster for those who work there and a driver of better cyber hygiene throughout the government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was distressing to me when Attorney General [Jeff] Sessions came into the Judiciary Committee the other day and he could not name the person in the Department of Justice responsible for cybersecurity legislation,\u201d Sen. Whitehouse said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cMy guess is there is no such person, but that\u2019s not where we should be.
