{"id":17339,"date":"2015-12-07T19:48:23","date_gmt":"2015-12-07T19:48:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/12\/07\/federal-fuel-consumption-hits-new-low\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:44:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:44:12","slug":"federal-fuel-consumption-hits-new-low","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/smr\/acquisition-smr\/2015\/12\/07\/federal-fuel-consumption-hits-new-low\/","title":{"rendered":"Federal fuel consumption hits new low"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">According to the Energy Information Administration, f<\/span>Federal fuel consumption for fiscal\u00a0<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span>2014 fell to the lowest level since the data was first measured<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">,<\/span> in 1975, according to the Energy Information Administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a Dec. 7 post, the EIA said the federal government consumed 0.94 quadrillion British thermal units, less than the 0.96 quadrillion BTUs consumed in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Related:\u00a0<\/strong><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eia.gov\/todayinenergy\/detail.cfm?id=24032\">Read the report<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">According to the post, a<\/span>A decline in the use of jet fuel helped reduce overall consumption, as the federal government burned 10 billion fewer BTUs in 2014 than the 424 billion consumed in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The EIA post noted that <\/span>The Department of Defense <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">still <\/span>leads agencies with 78 percent of the federal government\u2019s fuel consumption in fiscal <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span>2014, according to the EIA post. Civilian agencies account for 22 percent with the U.S. Postal Service, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Energy combining for half of the consumption rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The DoD<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">epartment of Defense<\/span>\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/energy.defense.gov\/portals\/25\/documents\/reports\/FY%202014%20OE%20Annual%20Report.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Fiscal Year <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/energy.defense.gov\/portals\/25\/documents\/reports\/FY%202014%20OE%20Annual%20Report.pdf\">2014 Operational Energy Annual Report<\/a>, which measured the amount of energy spent on missions, cited Air Force efforts to reduce both fuel consumption lowering amounts needed in flight reserves, as well as changing flight patterns to optimize fuel consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Other branches also focused on lowering their consumption through initiatives like the Navy&#8217;s Aviation Energy Conservation Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span class=\"rte rte-comment\">The report said that t<\/span>The DoD required 87 billion barrels, worth $14 billion in fiscal <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span>2014, and the report estimated it would need an additional 3.2 billion <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">more <\/span>barrels in fiscal <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span>2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EIA post noted that DoD still leads agencies with 78 percent of the federal government&#8217;s fuel consumption in FY2104. Civilian agencies account for 22 percent with the U.S. Postal Service, the Department of Veterans Affairs and the Department of Energy combining for half of the consumption rate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy-saving efforts like renewable energy usage and alternative fuels have also played a role in reducing consumption across government. The EIA reported that 6.1 percent of the energy used in federal buildings in fiscal<span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span> 2014 came from renewable sources, with a 10 percent goal set for fiscal <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span>2016.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There has also been a push for alternative fuel vehicles, with electric vehicles increasing 64 percent since fiscal <span class=\"rte rte-comment\">FY<\/span>2010. Ethanol vehicles have also been on the rise, with the U.S. Postal Service, the largest agency fleet, acquiring E85 vehicles for 47 percent of its acquisitions in the past decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The EIA&#8217;s Federal Energy Management Program began tracking fuel consumption in 1975, when the federal government consumed 1.56 quadrillion
