{"id":18351,"date":"2015-10-01T19:52:26","date_gmt":"2015-10-01T19:52:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/10\/01\/opm-starts-notifying-breach-victims-by-mail\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:45:50","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:45:50","slug":"opm-starts-notifying-breach-victims-by-mail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2015\/10\/01\/opm-starts-notifying-breach-victims-by-mail\/","title":{"rendered":"OPM starts notifying breach victims \u2014 by mail"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Millions of Americans who applied to work for the federal government \u2014 whether they were eventually hired or not \u2014 will get letters\u00a0in the mail within the next 12 weeks confirming that\u00a0their personal information was stolen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Sept. 30, the Office of Personnel Management shipped\u00a0the\u00a0first set of notices\u00a0to the estimated 21.5 million\u00a0affected by the breach of its\u00a0networks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over the next three months, those affected will receive a letter detailing the identity protection and credit monitoring services being offered and an individual PIN to be used to enroll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The protection services are being offered through ID Experts, the contractors chosen off of the General Services Administration&#8217;s new breach response blanket purchase agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I understand that many of you are frustrated and concerned and would like to receive this information soon,&#8221; Cobert wrote in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/blogs\/Director\/\">an Oct. 1 blog post<\/a>. &#8220;My personal data was also stolen in this breach and I am eager to get my notification letter as soon as possible so that I can sign up for [identity protection] services. However, given the sensitive nature of the database that was breached \u2014 and the sheer volume of people affected \u2014 we are all going to have to be patient throughout this notification process.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those who do not receive a letter but still think their information was compromised will be able to reach out to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/cybersecurity\/#Actions\">verification center currently being set up<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In her blog post, Cobert stressed that neither OPM nor ID Experts will contact anyone asking to confirm personal information.
