{"id":19160,"date":"2019-06-06T20:46:09","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T20:46:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/06\/06\/lawmakers-order-deeper-transdigm-probe-by-dod-watchdog\/"},"modified":"2026-08-07T22:13:17","modified_gmt":"2026-08-07T22:13:17","slug":"lawmakers-order-deeper-transdigm-probe-by-dod-watchdog","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2019\/06\/06\/lawmakers-order-deeper-transdigm-probe-by-dod-watchdog\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers order deeper TransDigm probe by DoD watchdog"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2015 It\u2019s not over yet for TransDigm, the defense contractor that repaid the government $16 million in overcharges amid heat from U.S. lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Members of the House Oversight and Government Committee on Thursday, weeks after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/congress\/2019\/05\/15\/defense-firms-excess-profits-land-in-congresss-crosshairs\/\" target=_blank>grilling<\/a> TransDigm\u2019s chairman at a hearing on Capitol Hill, requested the Department of Defense Inspector General probe the aircraft parts supplier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The request came in a letter to the IG from committee Chairman Elijah Cummings, D-Md.; national security subpanel Chairman Stephen Lynch, D-Mass.; and committee members Jackie Speier and Ro Khanna, both Democrats from California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawmakers want to know whether TransDigm overcharged the government on a widespread basis. The previous IG examination, requested by Khanna in 2017, only covered a small sample of TransDigm\u2019s contracts \u2015 and it still found the Defense Logistics Agency and the Army overpaid for nearly all of them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBecause you identified so many overcharges in just the small sample of contracts you examined, we believe it is highly likely that TransDigm is receiving additional excess profits that have not yet been identified,\u201d the lawmakers wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/defensenews\/industry\/2019\/02\/27\/pentagon-requests-voluntary-refund-of-millions-of-dollars-from-contractor-transdigm\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/D3-The_Pentagon_US_Department_of_Defense_building.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pentagon requests voluntary refund of millions of dollars from contractor TransDigm<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">TransDigm, a parts manufacturer, made more profit than it should have off of its DoD contracts, per a new report.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Days after members at TransDigm\u2019s May 15 hearing asked that it repay the money, TransDigm sent the Defense Department an $11.5 million installment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The outrage has been bipartisan. Last month, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Chuck Grassley, R-Iowa, sent a letter to acting Defense Secretary Patrick Shanahan, President Donald Trump\u2019s intended nominee to lead the department, seeking more information.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawmakers who requested a new probe asked that the IG review all contracts awarded to TransDigm by the DoD from 2017 to the present, with a value between $200,000 and $250,000, and between $600,000 and $750,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">TransDigm told the committee it received $782 million in revenue
