{"id":20152,"date":"2015-11-18T20:37:24","date_gmt":"2015-11-18T20:37:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2015\/11\/18\/dhs-head-us-will-accept-10000-syrian-refugees-in-2016\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:47:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:47:28","slug":"dhs-head-us-will-accept-10000-syrian-refugees-in-2016","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/smr\/cybercon\/2015\/11\/18\/dhs-head-us-will-accept-10000-syrian-refugees-in-2016\/","title":{"rendered":"DHS head: US will accept 10,000 Syrian refugees in 2016"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the humanitarian crisis continues in Syria and the territories held by the Islamic State terrorist group, the U.S. will be taking in at least 10,000 refugees, Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson reaffirmed during a Nov. 18 speech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;The world faces an unprecedented outpouring of more than 4 million refugees from Syria,&#8221; Johnson said during a keynote address at CyberCon 2015, hosted by Federal Times, adding that America holds a responsibility to have a hand in helping these people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/cybercon\/\" target=\"_blank\">Get full CyberCon 2015 coverage<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the U.S. took in some 2,000 refugees, Johnson said, stating that the administration intends to welcome five times as many in the next calendar year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While this is a big increase, it&#8217;s still only 0.25 percent of the millions of refugees seeking asylum, Johnson noted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The vast majority of these refugees being accepted into the U.S. will be women, children and families, the secretary said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Both the U.N.
