Will Hurd, R-Texas, said \u201cwhoever gets to true quantum computing first will be able to negate all the encryption that we\u2019ve ever done to date. That is why China, that is why Russia is sucking up ciphertext.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ciphertext, he explained, is encrypted data that cannot be read without the proper cryptogram code. Despite the fact these nations can\u2019t read the data because they don\u2019t have the decryption keys, once they achieve quantum, they\u2019ll be able to break it and read everything they\u2019ve accumulated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cQuantum is going to get us to a point where we\u2019re going to have to rethink encryption,\u201d Hurd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top intelligence officials have been warning of advancements in quantum for some time with varied alarm. Earlier this month, the Pentagon reorganized its leadership structure to emphasize a series of emerging technologies, including quantum science. Gen. In his view, the race for the technology is tied between the United States and Russia, though other federal leaders have noted the United States still leads.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/c4isrnet\/intel-geoint\/2018\/03\/15\/intelligence-official-us-still-leads-in-quantum-computing-for-now\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-654209898.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Intelligence official: US still leads in quantum computing &#8230; for now<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Despite investments by competitors such as China, the U.S. still leads quantum computing research according to the director of the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">To push ahead and maintain an advantage, Hurd advocated for a national coordinator for quantum computing within the White House. This coordinator would be on par with what the government did with nanotechnology 15 years ago, eventually leading the way for industry and being a champion in that space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hurd highlighted a <a href=\"https:\/\/science.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/smith-announces-intent-introduce-national-quantum-initiative-act-hosts-first\" target=_blank>proposal in Congress <\/a>that would enact quantum coordination in the federal government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat is probably the best piece of legislation right now in Washington,\u201d he said, \u201cUltimately we need an increase in basic science happening in the federal government.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
