NATIONAL HARBOR, Maryland \u2014 The military\u2019s habit of labeling too much information as classified hinders cooperation with allies, Marine generals said Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marine Commandant Gen. David Berger, speaking at a panel at the Navy League\u2019s Sea-Air-Space in National Harbor, Maryland, stressed the importance of collaborating with other countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSometimes we get in our own way, by over-classifying, over-compartmentalizing,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd yet we say our strategy is underpinned by allies and partners. You can\u2019t have it both ways.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Partnerships are less formal relationships<\/a> than alliances and don\u2019t involve a treaty, according to a Defense Department definition.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
