Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., as the new chair of the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maloney takes the place of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2019\/10\/17\/powerful-democratic-congressman-elijah-cummings-has-died\/\" target=_blank>late Rep. Elijah Cummings<\/a> of Maryland, who died in mid-October of complications from longstanding health challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I am deeply humbled and grateful to my colleagues for entrusting me with the chairmanship,\u201d Maloney said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI&#8217;m honored by this opportunity to do more for the American people and will do my best to follow the honorable example that Chairman Cummings left for us all. There&#8217;s much work to be done, and I can&#8217;t wait to get started.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maloney, who temporarily took over the chairmanship immediately following Cummings\u2019s death, is the first woman chosen to lead the oversight committee and has spearheaded legislation benefiting federal employees, such as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/pay-benefits\/2019\/03\/05\/congress-moves-to-guarantee-paid-family-leave\/\" target=_blank>guarantee of paid family leave<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The chair position of the House Oversight and Reform Committee was left vacant after the death of Rep.
