{"id":23451,"date":"2021-04-20T22:25:44","date_gmt":"2021-04-20T22:25:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/04\/20\/us-under-biden-will-no-longer-call-migrants-illegal-aliens\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:55:04","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:55:04","slug":"us-under-biden-will-no-longer-call-migrants-illegal-aliens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2021\/04\/20\/us-under-biden-will-no-longer-call-migrants-illegal-aliens\/","title":{"rendered":"US under Biden will no longer call migrants \u2018illegal aliens\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">WASHINGTON \u2014 Employees of the two main U.S. immigration enforcement agencies were directed Monday to stop referring to migrants as \u201caliens,\u201d a dated term that many people consider offensive. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Memos issued by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/leadership\/2019\/04\/09\/acting-dhs-head-had-key-role-in-controversial-trump-policies\/\" target=_blank>Customs and Border Protection<\/a>, as well as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/2020\/04\/22\/trump-order-to-bar-new-green-cards-not-temporary-visas\/\" target=_blank>Immigration and Customs Enforcement,<\/a> tells employees to use the words \u201cnon-citizen\u201d or \u201cmigrant.\u201d The change reflects guidelines set by the Biden administration, which is reversing many of the anti-immigrant policies of former President Donald Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of \u201cillegal aliens,\u201d which was still being used by some government officials in press releases and elsewhere, the employees of CBP and ICE should instead use \u201cundocumented noncitizen\u201d or \u201cundocumented individual,\u201d according to the memos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Acting CBP Commissioner Troy Miller said the directives were necessary to \u201cset a tone and example\u201d at an agency that includes the Border Patrol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe enforce our nation\u2019s laws while also maintaining the dignity of every individual with whom we interact,\u201d Miller said. \u201cThe words we use matter and will serve to further confer that dignity to those in our custody.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administration critics dismissed the new language guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe use the term \u2018illegal alien\u2019 because they\u2019re here illegally,\u201d said Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas. \u201cThis kind of weakness and obsession with political correctness is why we\u2019re having a crisis on the border in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As recently as last Thursday, CBP issued a press release out of Texas that described a Border Patrol operation in the Rio Grande Valley \u201cresulting in the apprehension of ten illegal aliens.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But a release Monday seemed to comply with the memo, describing the rescue of a \u201clost undocumented noncitizen\u201d near Ocotillo, California.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The change in language comes as the Biden administration deals with a record number of children and teens, mostly from Central America, seeking to enter the U.S. at the southwest border. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the new guidelines, \u201cunaccompanied alien children\u201d would be referred to as \u201cunaccompanied noncitizen children,\u201d according to the memos. Employees are also directed to describe the \u201cassimilation\u201d of refugees and immigrants as \u201ccivic integration.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">CBP is turning away most adult migrants attempting to enter the U.S. under a public health order issued at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. But the Biden administration is allowing unaccompanied minors and some families to remain, at least temporarily, while authorities determine whether they can stay through the asylum process or under some other legal category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Biden administration officials blame the rising number of migrants at the southwest border on a number of factors, including two recent hurricanes that struck Central America and the economic ravages of COVID-19 in the region. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Critics blame the administration\u2019s moves to reverse some of the hundreds of measures taken under President Donald Trump to curb both legal and illegal immigration and support for legislation that would enable some already in the country to
