The trains always seem to be delayed. But riders of the Washington Metro should add another item to their list of subway-riding fears:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Washington Metropolitan Area Transit Authority system is vulnerable to cyberattacks that could disrupt operations, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/local\/trafficandcommuting\/metro-cybersecurity-audit-highlights-growing-concerns-at-agencies-across-the-country\/2018\/07\/07\/302048de-7e2f-11e8-b0ef-fffcabeff946_story.html?noredirect=on&amp;utm_term=.4258782d4597\" data-original-title=\"\" title=\"\" class=\"selected-link\">according<\/a> to a report in the Washington Post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Post says that a classified inspector general report questioned whether Washington\u2019s train system can handle a digital attack, a glaring vulnerability in the capital\u2019s transportation network. The Metro system decided not to make the report public because it would undermine IT security, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes as federal officials have become increasingly concerned about digital attacks on America\u2019s critical infrastructure, or the systems that underlie daily life for citizens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the Sacramento Regional Transit system suffered from a cyberattack that destroyed some internal backup devices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, former President Barack Obama and Chinese leader Xi Jinping agreed not to attack critical infrastructure systems in each other\u2019s respective countries. That same year, the Department of Homeland Security <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/tss-cybersecurity-framework-implementation-guide-2016-508v2_0.pdf\" title=\"\" class=\"\">released <\/a>a guide for transportation systems to boost their cybersecurity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While any changes are not expected to take place on D.C.\u2019s Metro system anytime soon, riders can still take solace that, for all its quirks, it functions.
