{"id":23773,"date":"2019-12-07T02:11:15","date_gmt":"2019-12-07T02:11:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/12\/07\/defense-spending-bill-likely-to-include-family-leave-for-feds\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:57:03","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:57:03","slug":"defense-spending-bill-likely-to-include-family-leave-for-feds","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/fedlife\/benefits\/2019\/12\/07\/defense-spending-bill-likely-to-include-family-leave-for-feds\/","title":{"rendered":"Defense spending bill likely to include family leave for feds"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Congressional negotiators at the White House reached a tentative deal Dec. 6 to include 12 weeks of paid parental leave for feds in the 2020 National Defense Authorization Act, a congressional source familiar with the NDAA negotiations told Federal Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The push to guarantee that federal employees get 12 weeks of paid time off in the case of a new child or family health emergency has been most recently active since April 2018, when then-Rep. Barbara Comstock of Virginia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/pay-benefits\/2018\/06\/29\/feds-get-12-weeks-paid-parental-leave-under-new-bill\/\" target=_blank>introduced legislation<\/a> to mandate it across the federal government. That bill did not make it into that law that year, but a new session of Congress saw the same guarantee made in both <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/pay-benefits\/2019\/03\/05\/congress-moves-to-guarantee-paid-family-leave\/\" target=_blank>Senate and House legislation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A provision ensuring such leave was also included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/budget\/2019\/07\/11\/defense-budget-bill-could-carry-changes-for-feds\/\" target=_blank>House version<\/a> of the 2020 NDAA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the congressional source, though Republicans resisted the family leave addition in defense spending, the yet-to-be-finalized defense budget is likely to include a guarantee of such leave for all federal employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, federal employees only receive six to eight weeks of sick leave, followed under the Family Medical Leave Act by an additional 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a new child.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Feds could see over two months of guaranteed paid
