The full congressional panel will take up the proposal at a July 12 meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the department embarks on the country\u2019s largest EHR overhaul, we must ensure veterans and taxpayers are protected during the transition,\u201d Roe said in a statement. \u201cHaving personally gone through a transition to a new health record system in private practice, I know how much potential there is for a project like this to be a huge and expensive disruption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cCongress has a responsibility to conduct rigorous oversight throughout every step of the process.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2018\/05\/17\/va-finalizes-contract-to-bring-electronic-health-records-in-line-with-military-systems\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ARM-medical-records-2-web.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA finalizes contract to bring electronic health records in line with military systems<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The multi-year and multi-billion-dollar effort could have wide ranging impact on all of American health care.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The announcement comes a month after VA officials finalized a contract with the Missouri-based Cerner Corp. to bring veterans\u2019 electronic medical records in line with Defense Department systems over the next decade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conflicting VA and military electronic health files have been a source of controversy for years, with both departments promising new initiatives to improve record sharing but delivering partial results.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last summer, President Donald Trump touted plans to bring together the two systems \u2014 through a non-competitive contract worth upwards of $10 billion \u2014 as a major advance in his promise to reform and modernize VA operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But outside advocates raised concerns with the implementation of Cerner\u2019s new MHS GENESIS records system at initial military sites earlier this year, prompting questions about how well the new system will work with VA\u2019s massive patient databases and sprawling medical system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Committee officials said the new oversight panel will help monitor those concerns. Ranking member Rep. Tim Walz, D-Minn., praised the effort as critical to ensuring success of a host of VA information technology initiatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhether it is preventing disruptions in patient care, protecting the privacy of veterans, or ensuring American taxpayer dollars are invested responsibly and in a way that will improve healthcare delivery for veterans, it is important Congress is well-suited to hold VA accountable every step of the way,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The electronic medical records overhaul had been a top priority of former VA Secretary David Shulkin, before he was dismissed by Trump in March over agency infighting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Administration officials have said since then that they remain committed to the project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Today Chairman <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DrPhilRoe?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@DrPhilRoe<\/a> and Ranking Member <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepTimWalz?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepTimWalz<\/a> announced the creation of a new subcommittee to focus on VA IT projects.
