President Donald Trump\u2019s ex-strategist is blasting White House aides who publicly distanced themselves from the president\u2019s response to Charlottesville \u2014 yet stick it out in the West Wing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Steve Bannon, in a CBS interview weeks after he was pushed out, singled out Trump economic adviser Gary Cohn, saying, \u201cIf you don\u2019t like what he\u2019s doing and you don\u2019t agree with it, you have an obligation to resign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Cohn, in an interview with The Financial Times, had sharply denounced Trump for saying that \u201cmany sides\u201d were to blame for the violence in Charlottesville, Virginia, and criticized the administration\u2019s response to incident.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bannon\u2019s take: \u201cYou can tell him, \u2018Hey, maybe you can do it a better way.\u2019 But if you\u2019re going to break, then resign. If you\u2019re going to break with him, resign.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Asked if Cohn should have quit, Bannon said: \u201cAbsolutely.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bannon, a favorite among the farther-right in the GOP, was jettisoned from his post in August after a turbulent seven months in the West Wing. He returned to Breitbart News, which he led before joining Trump\u2019s campaign.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Calling himself a \u201cstreet fighter,\u201d Bannon said \u201cthat\u2019s why Donald Trump and I get along so well. I\u2019m going to be his wing man outside for the entire time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Bannon also used the \u201c60 Minutes\u201d interview to criticize the Roman Catholic church, after church leaders denounced Trump\u2019s decision to end a program that protected hundreds of thousands of young immigrants from deportation. He said bishops \u201cneed illegal aliens to fill the churches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The bishops, Bannon said, \u201chave an economic interest in unlimited immigration, unlimited illegal immigration. … This is not doctrine at all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
