{"id":24730,"date":"2022-11-03T12:39:54","date_gmt":"2022-11-03T12:39:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/11\/03\/number-of-homeless-vets-drops-in-latest-inter-agency-count\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:02:30","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:02:30","slug":"number-of-homeless-vets-drops-in-latest-inter-agency-count","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2022\/11\/03\/number-of-homeless-vets-drops-in-latest-inter-agency-count\/","title":{"rendered":"Number of homeless vets drops in latest inter-agency count"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The number of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/06\/01\/advocates-for-homeless-vets-push-past-pandemic-restrictions-to-their-next-big-challenge-inflation\/\" target=\"_blank\">veterans experiencing homelessness<\/a> sank more than 11% from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/18\/the-number-of-veterans-experiencing-homelessness-rose-slightly-even-before-the-coronavirus-pandemic\/\" target=\"_blank\">start of 2020<\/a> to early 2022, a dramatic drop after several years of limited progress in finding shelter for those individuals, federal officials said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The annual national Point-in-Time count shows 33,136 veterans across the U.S. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/06\/03\/va-officials-lagging-in-goal-of-housing-38000-distressed-vets-this-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">without reliable housing options,<\/a> down from 37,252 at the same point two years earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials said the progress shows not only the work that still needs to be done to help veterans, but also that targeted efforts to help veterans avoid homelessness can produce positive results.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/01\/advocates-for-homeless-vets-push-past-pandemic-restrictions-to-their-next-big-challenge-inflation\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-72509053.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Advocates for homeless vets face next big challenge: inflation<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Rising housing prices could counter re-energized efforts from housing advocates to help more financially distressed veterans.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOne veteran experiencing homelessness will always be one too many, but the [new data] shows that we are making real progress in the fight to end veteran homelessness,\u201d VA Secretary Denis McDonough said in a statement Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from VA, the Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness conduct the Point-in-Time count annually to gauge the American homeless population \u2014 including veterans \u2014 on a single night each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2022 count \u2014 held in January \u2014 was the first full exercise since 2020, because coronavirus pandemic restrictions scuttled efforts to hold the in-person surveying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Since 2010 \u2014 when President Barack Obama announced a new focus on ending veterans homelessness \u2014 the number has dropped by more than 55% (from 76,329). However, from 2016 to 2020, improvement in the numbers was largely flat, falling only about 6% over the four-year span.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAll veterans deserve to have what they need to lead healthy, safe and successful lives. That starts with a place to call home,\u201d HUD Secretary Marcia Fudge said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe data released today shows we are closer than ever in ensuring that every veteran in America has a home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">HUD officials are expected to release information on homelessness nationwide before the end of the year. However, officials who are familiar with the data said that the rate of improvement among veterans outpaced that of the general population.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/18\/the-number-of-veterans-experiencing-homelessness-rose-slightly-even-before-the-coronavirus-pandemic\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"170\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HomelessVets2020.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">The number of veterans experiencing homelessness rose slightly even before the coronavirus pandemic<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Of every 10,000 veterans in America as of January 2020, roughly 21 were living on the streets.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials credited that with targeted assistance for veterans in financial distress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Department officials have also publicly pledged to find permanent housing for 38,000 veterans this year. As of Nov. 1, almost 31,000 individuals had been helped through that effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials did not release any data on the geographic location of the remaining homeless veterans or information about their race, gender or other demographics. That detail is expected to be made public in coming days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials from the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans praised the news but said more needs to be done. The group is urging lawamkers to make permanent pandemic-era rules and funding for programs to assist homeless veterans homelessness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re pleased to see the return of double-digit decreases in veteran homelessness,\u201d said David Higgins Jr., spokesman for NCHV. \u201cThis would not have been possible without our members, and other
