{"id":24811,"date":"2019-09-06T19:54:46","date_gmt":"2019-09-06T19:54:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2019\/09\/06\/will-a-new-ai-office-energize-this-agency\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:50:14","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:50:14","slug":"will-a-new-ai-office-energize-this-agency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/it-networks\/2019\/09\/06\/will-a-new-ai-office-energize-this-agency\/","title":{"rendered":"Will a new AI office energize this agency?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Energy announced the establishment of a new office focused solely on artificial intelligence projects at the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The office, dubbed the \u201cArtificial Intelligence and Technology Office,<b>\u201d <\/b>will be the \u201ccoordinating hub for the work being done across the DoE enterprise in artificial intelligence,&#8221; according to a department press release Sept. 6.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis new office housed within the Department of Energy will concentrate our existing efforts while also facilitating partnerships and access to federal data, models and high performance computing resources for America\u2019s AI researchers,\u201d said DoE secretary Rick Perry in a statement. &#8220;Its mission will be to elevate, accelerate and expand DoE\u2019s transformative work to accelerate America\u2019s progress in AI for years to come.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the press release, the DoE is using AI to improve the resiliency of the electric grid and better cybersecurity, in addition to other things. The department\u2019s national labs also have four of the world\u2019s fastest supercomputers, in addition to building three exascale computers, which can do a quintillion calculations per second. These computers will help develop AI capabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe world is in the midst of the golden age of AI, and DoE\u2019s world-class scientific and computing capabilities will be critical to securing America\u2019s dominance in this field,\u201d Perry said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department\u2019s third exascale computer, worth $600 million, will help the United States <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c4isrnet.com\/it-networks\/2019\/08\/14\/new-supercomputer-will-help-prevent-nuclear-weapon-testing\/\" target=_blank>move away from<\/a> underground nuclear weapons testing and is expected to be done in 2022.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Department of Energy set up an office to coordinate
