{"id":25242,"date":"2022-10-25T16:56:35","date_gmt":"2022-10-25T16:56:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/10\/25\/claims-of-burn-pit-exposure-pour-in-as-vets-seek-pact-act-benefits\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:00:08","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:00:08","slug":"claims-of-burn-pit-exposure-pour-in-as-vets-seek-pact-act-benefits","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2022\/10\/25\/claims-of-burn-pit-exposure-pour-in-as-vets-seek-pact-act-benefits\/","title":{"rendered":"Claims of burn pit exposure pour in as vets seek PACT Act benefits"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said it received nearly 113,000 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/06\/27\/overdue-veterans-disability-claims-down-almost-a-quarter-in-last-four-months\/\" target=\"_blank\">disability claims<\/a> related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/08\/04\/now-that-the-pact-act-passed-how-soon-will-veterans-see-their-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\">toxic exposure legislation<\/a> signed into law less than three months ago, an indication of the potential impact of the measure and the work ahead for the agency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benefits officials began accepting claims for all presumptive illnesses included in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/09\/01\/vets-can-apply-for-all-pact-act-benefits-now-after-va-speeds-up-law\/\" target=\"_blank\">Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act<\/a> (better known as the PACT Act) after it was signed by President Joe Biden on Aug. 10.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include 12 types of cancer and a dozen other respiratory illnesses linked to burn pit exposure in the Gulf War and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan; hypertension and monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance for veterans who served in Vietnam; and radiation-related illnesses for veterans who served in several new locations in the 1960s and early 1970s.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/09\/01\/vets-can-apply-for-all-pact-act-benefits-now-after-va-speeds-up-law\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635593513448567310-538942jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Vets can apply for all PACT Act benefits now after VA speeds up law<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Congress said officials could wait until 2026 to handle some claims, but White House officials have ordered VA to move faster.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coverage for those issues had been a point of contention for years. In particular, veterans advocates lamented that too many serious problems believed linked to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/03\/29\/what-are-military-burn-pits-and-why-are-veterans-worried-about-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">burn pit exposure<\/a> were being ignored by VA leaders because of incomplete science linking the health problems with the toxic smoke from the waste fires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the 75 days since the signing, the department has received 112,949 new applications for disability claims related to the new presumptive illnesses, an increase in the benefits workload of more than 21% from the same period last year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor too long, toxic-exposed veterans and their families have had to fight their government for the benefits and health care they\u2019ve earned,\u201d Acting Under Secretary for Benefits Josh Jacobs said in a statement. \u201cThanks to the PACT Act, generations of veterans will be able to get the care and benefits they deserve.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Depending on the severity of a veteran\u2019s injuries, he or she may be eligible for up to $4,000 in disability compensation. Presumptive status for service-connected illnesses cuts down on the paperwork veterans are required to file to receive the monthly checks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials have been urging veterans who believe they may be eligible to apply now, even though claims will not be processed until January. hundreds of thousands of U.S. service members.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, senior officials have warned that the backlog of overdue first-time claims (ones that take more than four months to complete) is likely to rise early next year because of the new PACT Act cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The backlog currently sits at more than 143,000 cases, roughly double what it was before the start of the coronavirus pandemic in America in March
