In her letter to Biden, she expressed \u201cmixed feelings\u201d about the decision and didn\u2019t say exactly why she was stepping down, but said the nation is at a moment of transition as <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/who-declares-covid-emergency-over-pandemic-8b6445735df5218b5d9d6ec32fa047ca\">emergency declarations come to an end<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI have never been prouder of anything I have done in my professional career,\u201d she wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The World Health Organization said Friday that COVID-19 no longer qualifies as a global emergency, and the U.S. public health emergency declaration will expire next week. <a href=\"https:\/\/covid.cdc.gov\/covid-data-tracker\/#trends_weeklydeaths_select_00\">Deaths in the U.S.<\/a> are at their lowest point since the earliest days of the coronavirus outbreak in early 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CDC, with a $12 billion budget and more than 12,000 employees. is an Atlanta-based federal agency charged with protecting Americans from disease outbreaks and other public health threats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walensky, previously an infectious-diseases specialist at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, had no experience running a government health agency when she was sworn in on the first day of the Biden administration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She came with a reputation as a prominent voice on the pandemic, sometimes criticizing certain aspects of how the government was responding. She was brought in to raise morale at the CDC, to rebuild public trust in the agency and to improve its sometimes-bumbling response to the pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"250\" height=\"194\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635711848217239611-cdc-logojpg.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11683\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walensky started a center for forecasting and outbreak analytics, took steps to modernize data and improve the public health work force. Last year, she <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/covid-science-health-public-rochelle-walensky-843cd83bf1d616846ff455f7f5f0d30d\">began a reorganization<\/a> designed to make the agency more nimble and to improve its communications with the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But there have been <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/coronavirus-pandemic-science-business-health-centers-for-disease-control-and-prevention-cf09f8a3d28915ac314ea97dd4a52c3b\">stumbles during her tenure<\/a> too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the spring of 2021, Walensky said fully vaccinated people could stop wearing masks in many settings, only to reverse course as the then-new delta variant spread.
