Just days after announcing a halt to the embattled Veterans Affairs electronic health records program<\/a>, department Secretary Denis McDonough will travel to Capitol Hill <\/a>to talk about the decision and what comes next for veterans support efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

McDonough is scheduled to testify on the fiscal 2024 budget request<\/a> and related issues before the Senate Appropriations Committee on April 26. A day earlier, the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee<\/a> will hold a separate hearing on the health records modernization effort, which was completely halted on April 21.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The decision to \u201creset\u201d the program came after months of delays and complaints about the new system, currently in use at five VA health care sites. Additional deployments were scheduled for later this year, but have now been put on hold indefinitely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lawmakers on the House committee have already questioned whether the $16-billion, 10-year project will ever be fully functional. Although only a portion of that total is included in the department\u2019s nearly $325 billion budget request for next fiscal year, McDonough will likely face significant questions about the ongoing costs and plan ahead for the program.<\/p>\n\n\n\nTuesday, April 25<\/strong>
