The breach was detected weeks later when customers complained to Microsoft about abnormal mail activity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe assess this adversary is focused on espionage, such as gaining access to email systems for intelligence collection,\u201d Charlie Bell, Microsoft\u2019s executive vice president of security, said in a separate Microsoft post.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A Washington Post report cited a statement from U.S. officials claiming Storm-0558 also breached unclassified email accounts linked to the U.S. government. A Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, Wang Wenbin, said the accusation was \u201cdisinformation\u201d aimed at diverting attention from U.S. cyberattacks on China.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo matter which agency issued this information, it will never change the fact that the United States is the world\u2019s largest hacker empire conducting the most cyber theft,\u201d Wang said in a routine briefing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSince last year, the cybersecurity organizations of China and other countries have issued many reports exposing the cyberattacks on China by the U.S. Government over a long period of time, but the U.S. has not made a response so far,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan, who is at the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania, where President Biden is, told ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America\u201d that the investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe detected it fairly rapidly and we were able to prevent further breaches,\u201d Sullivan said. \u201cThe matter is still being investigated, so I have to leave it there because we\u2019re gathering further information in consultation with Microsoft and we will continue to appraise the public as we learn more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Storm-0558 hackers used forged authentication tokens \u2014 pieces of information used to verify the identity of a user \u2014 required to access the email accounts, Microsoft said. It said it has dealt with the attack and informed affected customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Microsoft said it is working with the Department of Homeland Security and the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, among others, to guard against such attacks. It also said it would continue to monitor Storm-0558\u2032s activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last month, Google-owned cybersecurity firm Mandiant said <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/barracuda-mandiant-cybersecurity-china-hackers-a52d1595c9108d2c58df11e38756600d\">suspected state-backed Chinese hackers broke into the networks<\/a> of hundreds of public and private sector organizations globally by using a security hole in a popular email security tool.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this year, Microsoft said state-backed Chinese hackers were <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/microsoft-china-hacking-us-infrastructure-d4a4faefcc5d4d3c9f72e9acc24a71f9\">targeting U.S. critical infrastructure<\/a> and could be laying the technical groundwork to disrupt critical communications between the U.S. and Asia during future crises.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Storm-0558 hackers
