And without a case management system, OPM lacks a way to provide real-time alerts, often leaving retirees in the dark about where their application stands as time goes by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s something we were asking for,\u201d Lori Amos, deputy associate director for OPM Retirement Services, told reporters on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the meantime, the three-page resource consolidates frequently asked questions, lays out each stage of the claims processing timeline and estimates how long each step takes. The guide also provides tips on ensuring applicants fill out forms properly because if they don\u2019t, it takes longer. Last month, about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/about-us\/budget-performance\/strategic-plans\/agency-audit-monthly-update.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">24%<\/a> of retirement cases governmentwide had an error.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/fedlife\/financial-planning\/2023\/05\/01\/opmgov-introduces-a-chat-bot-to-answer-retirement-questions-for-feds\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"189\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1407361683.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">OPM.gov introduces chatbot that answers retirement questions<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Chatbots are a tool being used more and more by federal agencies, who have been charged by the White House via executive order to overhaul customer service<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, this information is available to them, but it\u2019s in various places on the website,\u201d said Amos. \u201cWhat we wanted to do was present a tool to the community so that they would have information that they need right at their fingertips, so that we can start to manage expectations.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The guide describes what happens in the days, weeks and months that go into processing an individual retirement case. It takes, about three to five months days to get that first full payout, with the longest part of the process happening under OPM\u2019s roof when it calculates annuity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The efficiency of this system has been a point of concern for lawmakers who sent a letter to OPM Director Kiran Ahuja last month, inquiring about what the office was planning to do about \u201cexcessive delays federal retirees in our states are facing as they wait to obtain their hard-earned retirement benefits.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">OPM did not immediately respond to a question about whether that letter had been addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, the last three months show OPM has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/fedlife\/2022\/09\/09\/why-its-taking-so-long-for-your-federal-retirement-to-process\/\" target=\"_blank\">processed cases at a record clip,<\/a> thanks to tiger teams that the office has stood up and shifting of resources to aging cases that have been in-process for more than 180 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of the cases that are aged cases, it\u2019s because of missing information or a missing signature or a form that wasn\u2019t included in the original packet,\u201d Amos said. \u201cIt\u2019s not for all of the cases, but for the majority of the cases that may be aged, we were taking a very active role and making sure that we get those packages healthy, get those packages complete and get them processed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amos also attributed improvements to using overtime and training to backfill positions quickly when vacancies arise. The agency has also been working on a hiring strategy, she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knowing retirements are a priority, OPM is requesting a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/about-us\/budget-performance\/budgets\/fy-2024-congressional-budget-justification\/executive-summary\/\" target=\"_blank\">2024 budget<\/a> that can support an overall increase of 368 full-time employees over fiscal 2023, including for the enhancement of retirement services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Amos said in particular, OPM needs staff who \u201ctrigger\u201d cases, or route them for payment.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/pay-benefits\/2021\/08\/04\/opm-to-pilot-new-online-retirement-application\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1064999520.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Government to pilot online retirement application<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Digitizing retirement applications is a short-term step to modernizing the whole system in the long run.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The office is also asking for money to fully digitize its retirement system.
