It is answered by Reg Jones, a charter member of the senior executive service and a Federal Times columnist since 1995.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Question: <\/b>This is a loaded question of sorts.&nbsp;The order of my government or federal service goes as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>\u201891-\u201999 Army (in this order: NG three years, Active Duty 3 years, IRR 2 years)<\/li><li>NAF Army MWR employee full time 3 years<\/li><li>USAG NAF Army employee full time 4 years<\/li><li>USAG AF Army employee full time 5 years (WG-11)<\/li><li>NAF employee full time AAFES 2010 to present<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Based on the above, I have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/2022\/09\/20\/how-will-changing-federal-agencies-affect-my-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\">cumulated service time<\/a> of (not counting ARNG and IRR) of approx. 25 years.&nbsp; If I were to return to the GS (AF) sector, would all my time (Prior service, AF &amp; NAF) be counted toward retirement? If not, how much time would?&nbsp; What would the minimum serve be prior to my retirement?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>Reg\u2019s Response<\/b>: To be vested in the federal government\u2019s retirement system, you would have to have a minimum of 5 years of full-time covered service, more if you worked part time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you did go to work for the federal government, your three years of active duty service would be creditable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/2022\/09\/28\/can-i-buy-back-active-duty-time-and-apply-it-to-fers-retirement\/\" target=\"_blank\">if you made a deposit to cover that time.<\/a> As a rule, your NAF service wouldn\u2019t be creditable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Got a question for the Federal Times expert?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Send inquiries to: <a href=\"mailto:fedexperts@federaltimes.com\">fedexperts@federaltimes.com<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Reg Jones is the resident expert on retirement and the federal government at Federal Times.
