The spending includes $3 billion in funding approved under <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-science-congress-climate-and-environment-f084d23d61ebb068068d4aa92c82fdbb\">a landmark climate and health policy adopted by Congress last year.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The White House hailed the announcement as a way to sustain reliable mail service to Americans while modernizing the fleet, reducing operating costs and clearing the air in neighborhoods across the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2022\/08\/24\/can-biden-fire-us-postmaster-general-louis-dejoy\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21055671765690.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Can Biden fire US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The nine-member United States Postal Service Board of Governors has the sole authority to fire, and hire, the postmaster general.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis is the Biden climate strategy on wheels and the U.S. Postal Service delivering for the American people,\u2019\u2019 said White House climate adviser Ali Zaidi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s wonderful that the Postal Service will be at the forefront of the switch to clean electric vehicles, with postal workers as their ambassadors,\u2019\u2019 said John Podesta, a senior White House adviser. \u201cIt will get people thinking, \u2018if the postal worker is driving an EV, I can drive an EV, too.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/biden-technology-business-electric-vehicles-climate-and-environment-b3ad03159e5156b2e867e02cdd0a999e\">The U.S. government operates the largest vehicle fleet in the world,<\/a> and the Postal Service is the largest fleet in the federal government with more than 220,000 vehicles, one-third of the overall U.S. fleet. The USPS announcement \u201csets the bar for the rest of the federal government, and, importantly, the rest of the world,\u2019\u2019 said Brenda Mallory, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Postmaster General Louis DeJoy, who came under fire for <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/climate-joe-biden-business-environment-and-nature-environment-0a0ead5536be0e3561b4cb2fccccb7a3\">an initial plan that included purchase of thousands of gas-powered trucks,<\/a> said the Postal Service is required by law to deliver mail and packages to 163 million addresses six days a week and to cover its costs in doing so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs I have said in the past, if we can achieve those objectives in a more environmentally responsible way, we will do so,\u201d he said in a statement Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DeJoy, a Republican donor and political ally of former President Donald Trump, thanked Podesta and other White House officials for putting aside political differences to \u201cfocus on moving the ball forward.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new fleet plan is \u201coperationally suitable, financially viable and climate friendly,\u2019\u2019 DeJoy said at a news conference outside Postal Service headquarters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A smiling Podesta shook hands with DeJoy and called him \u201cunforgettable\u2019&#8217; \u2014 a sharp contrast to White House criticism early this year when DeJoy announced a plan that would have made just 10% of the agency\u2019s next-generation fleet electric. The White House and Environmental Protection Agency slammed the Postal Service, an independent agency, for underestimating greenhouse gas emissions and failing to consider more environmentally sound alternatives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Environmental groups and <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-business-environment-louis-dejoy-sierra-club-43d28e9080bbbe6569d05dc1c34c71e8\">more than a dozen states, including California, New York and Illinois, sued to halt the initial plan<\/a> and asked judges to order a more thorough environmental review before the Postal Service moves forward with the fleet-modernization program. The Postal Service <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/technology-postal-service-climate-and-environment-ec6bc8491a7b121f5a1c150cabe6c9c8\">later adjusted its plan to ensure that half of its initial purchase of 50,000 next-generation vehicles would be electric.<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Katherine Garc\u00eda, director of the Sierra Club\u2019s clean transportation campaign, called the plan announced Tuesday \u201ca massive win for climate and public health\u201d and a common-sense decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/acquisition\/2022\/10\/02\/biden-bid-to-make-federal-vehicle-fleet-electric-off-to-slow-start\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Harris_ev.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Biden bid for zero-emissions federal vehicle fleet off to slow start<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">At a rate of 35,000 to 50,000 GSA car purchases a year, it will take years, if not decades, to convert the entire federal fleet.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cInstead of receiving pollution with their daily mail packages, communities across the U.S. will get the relief of cleaner air,\u2019\u2019 she said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery neighborhood, every household in America deserves to have electric USPS trucks delivering clean air with their mail, and today\u2019s announcement takes us almost all the way there,\u2019\u2019 said Adrian Martinez, a senior attorney for Earthjustice, one of the groups that sued the Postal Service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., chairman of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, said the Postal Service announcement \u201crepresents real progress,\u2019\u2019 but said, \u201cI\u2019m still not ready yet to call this job finished. We must keep up the pressure until 100% of USPS\u2019s delivery fleet runs on clean energy.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Gary Peters, D-Mich., who chairs the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee, said he will \u201cpush for every part of the postal fleet to be environmentally friendly and union-made.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition to modern safety equipment, the new delivery vehicles are taller, making it easier for postal carriers to grab the packages that make up a greater share of volume.
