{"id":26402,"date":"2023-05-31T18:03:25","date_gmt":"2023-05-31T18:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/05\/31\/is-juneteenth-a-paid-federal-holiday\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T04:54:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T04:54:22","slug":"is-juneteenth-a-paid-federal-holiday","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/fedlife\/career\/2023\/05\/31\/is-juneteenth-a-paid-federal-holiday\/","title":{"rendered":"Is Juneteenth a paid federal holiday?"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Juneeteenth, a combination of the day and month of the holiday commemorating the end of slavery, is the newest federal holiday designed by the U.S government.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The holiday became officially recognized on June 17, 2021, by President Joe Biden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Though often confused with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/fedlife\/career\/2023\/04\/03\/is-emancipation-day-a-federal-holiday\/\" target=\"_blank\">Emancipation Day, <\/a>which is observed two months earlier by Washington D.C.\u2019s local government and celebrates the signing of the President Abraham Lincoln\u2019s historic proclamation outlawing slavery, Juneteenth celebrates the day that news finally made it to more than 250,000 enslaved Black people living in Texas in 1865.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved African American people to be freed in Southern states, though because Texas was still under Confederate control, it would take almost two years from the date of Lincoln\u2019s signage for those inhabitants to hear the news and be free themselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The union army arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19 1865 and brought word that slavery had been abolished. Since then, at least eight states \u2014 New York, Maine, Louisiana, Virginia, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Washington and Illinois \u2014 have followed, according to AP.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2021, President Biden signed a bill into law to establish the holiday federally after an overwhelming 415-to-14 House vote and unanimous passage through the Senate, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/juneteenth-federal-holiday\/2021\/06\/16\/7be284d8-ceba-11eb-a7f1-52b8870bef7c_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">The Washington Post<\/a> reported at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBy making Juneteenth a federal holiday, all Americans can feel the power of this day, and learn from our history, and celebrate progress, and grapple with the distance we\u2019ve come but the distance we have to travel,\u201d Biden said in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/speeches-remarks\/2021\/06\/17\/remarks-by-president-biden-at-signing-of-the-juneteenth-national-independence-day-act\/\" target=\"_blank\">remarks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal employees will have Monday, June 19, 2023, off from work, creating a three-day weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are<a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/pay-leave\/federal-holidays\/\" target=\"_blank\"> 11 federal holidays <\/a>recognized by the Office of Personnel Management. On these days, all non-essential government employees are off work, and most government offices are closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.opm.gov\/policy-data-oversight\/pay-leave\/federal-holidays\/#url=2022\">next <\/a>federal holiday is Independence Day on Tuesday, July 4th. The holiday commemorates the signing of the Declaration of Independence on the same day in 1776 marking the colonies unified intention to secede from the British Empire.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
