{"id":26444,"date":"2023-07-28T20:33:31","date_gmt":"2023-07-28T20:33:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/07\/28\/lawmakers-request-ufo-select-committee-after-whistleblower-testimony\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:04:12","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:04:12","slug":"lawmakers-request-ufo-select-committee-after-whistleblower-testimony","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2023\/07\/28\/lawmakers-request-ufo-select-committee-after-whistleblower-testimony\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers request UFO select committee after whistleblower testimony"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A bipartisan group of lawmakers <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepTimBurchett\/status\/1684956861898919936\/photo\/1\" target=\"_blank\">sent a letter<\/a> to House Speaker <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/congress\/budget\/2023\/05\/29\/debt-ceiling-agreement-locks-in-bidens-proposed-defense-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\">Kevin McCarthy<\/a> on Friday requesting a committee to investigate government programs involving unidentified aerial phenomena, or UAPs, following a whistleblower\u2019s testimony Wednesday at a House Oversight Committee hearing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Reps. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/07\/14\/defense-bill-amendments-target-increased-ufo-transparency-for-public\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tim Burchett<\/a>, R-Tenn., and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/07\/26\/ufo-whistleblower-claims-hes-under-threat-for-revealing-secret-ops\/\" target=\"_blank\">Anna Paulina Luna<\/a>, R-Fla., who spearheaded the whistleblower hearing, along with Reps. Jared Moskowitz, D-Fla., and Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., sent the letter following testimony by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airforcetimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/07\/26\/ufo-whistleblower-claims-hes-under-threat-for-revealing-secret-ops\/\" target=\"_blank\">David Grusch<\/a>, a former intelligence officer who worked on the National Reconnaissance Office\u2019s UAP Task Force.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trio requested a select committee \u201cwith subpoena authority\u201d to investigate further claims made by Grusch and others. The goal of the committee would be \u201cto go about the task of collecting information from the Pentagon and elsewhere for the benefit of the public and to discharge our constitutional, legislative and oversight roles,\u201d the trio wrote in the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis issue is much bigger than the news cycle: it represents a confluence of concerning governmental actions that indicates a lack of forthrightness on the part of the Pentagon and the intelligence community. No governmental program, no matter how sensitive, can be outside the view of Congress,\u201d the group continued.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government has operated \u2014 without congressional knowledge or oversight \u2014 a decades-long UFO retrieval and reverse engineering program, Grusch told lawmakers Wednesday. Asked by Rep. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/federal-oversight\/congress\/2023\/07\/26\/lawmakers-grill-pentagon-officials-over-failure-of-mytravel-program\/\" target=\"_blank\">Nancy Mace<\/a>, R-S.C., if the government had retrieved the pilots of the collected aircraft, the retired airman said that some of the UFOs retrieved had \u201cbiologics\u201d in them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Grusch did not name the government officials involved in the program, nor did he provide any documents to corroborate his testimony. He did say a number of times during the hearing that he would divulge more information to lawmakers in a classified setting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The testimony flew in the face of previous statements from Pentagon officials, including the Pentagon\u2019s head of UFO research and analysis, Sean Kirkpatrick, who previously denied the existence of an alien exploitation program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kirkpatrick, who leads the Pentagon All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office, told senators in April that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/21\/no-credible-evidence-of-alien-ufo-activity-pentagon-official-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">there was \u201cno credible evidence\u201d<\/a> that any objects being examined by his office were of extraterrestrial origin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon declined to comment about the possibility of a committee on UFOs, but denied Grusch\u2019s claims of a crash retrieval program outside the purview of Congress.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The whistleblower claimed the
