Thompson, D-Miss., asked for the review last week, in part over concerns the proposals did not meet operational requirements and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2019\/09\/17\/the-pentagon-is-canceling-three-border-wall-projects-because-the-costs-went-up\/\" target=\"_blank\">prototypes came in late and over budget<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tommy Fisher, the head of the family business, said Thursday there would be \u201cnothing to find\u201d in an audit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe were told we were the lowest price and the best value,\u201d he said. \u201cWe look forward to working with the Army Corps of Engineers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/12\/11\/judge-halts-36-billion-diverted-from-military-construction-projects-for-border-wall\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP19254149368390.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Judge halts $3.6B diverted from military construction projects for border wall<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">A federal judge on Tuesday blocked the Trump administration from spending some Defense Department money to build a border wall with Mexico, the latest twist in a long-running legal battle over one of the president\u2019s signature domestic issues and campaign priorities.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The border wall is one of Trump\u2019s top priorities. He campaigned on a promise to build a \u201cbig beautiful wall\u201d between the U.S. and Mexico,&#8221; said Mexico would pay for it, and promised to build 450 to 500 miles by the end of 2020. Mexico is not paying for the wall and, as of Nov. 1, Trump had built 78 miles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s effort to push through funding, using money from the Pentagon after Congress refused to fund the wall has been met with resistance and lawsuits. A federal judge this week blocked the administration from spending some Defense Department money on the the barrier \u2014 the money includes the contract for Fisher.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company was awarded a contract Dec. 2 to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2019\/09\/11\/450-miles-of-pentagon-funded-border-wall-by-next-year-in-arizona-it-starts\/\" target=_blank>build 31 miles of wall in Arizona<\/a>, part of a series of contracts to push out increased mileage. Fisher had made a number of appearances on Trump\u2019s favorite cable news channel \u2014 Fox News \u2014 talking about his desire to win a contract. His firm, though, has little experience with such construction and a previous proposal was rejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fisher said his company could do the work for $13 million a mile. The interference in federal contracting by a president concerned some overseeing the process but, the officials said, Trump insisted Fisher could get the wall up faster and cheaper than other bidders. The officials weren\u2019t authorized to speak about internal discussions and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson had said one of his concerns was that officials from Homeland Security, the department managing border security, had toured a private barrier built by the company shortly before the contract was awarded.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pentagon watchdog said it was assessing how to complete the audit and would formally announce it soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thompson said he was pleased.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe company had never been awarded a construction contract before and their wall prototype was late and over budget,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cGiven the President\u2019s multiple endorsements of this company and the amount of taxpayer money at stake, I remain concerned about the possibility of inappropriate influence on the Army Corps\u2019 contracting decision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The award was the second-largest contract in the company\u2019s history. Previously, Fisher built highways, sold heavy equipment and did excavation work. The company unsuccessfully sued the government in April when it was not awarded a similar contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>Associated Press writers Elliot Spagat in San Diego,
