{"id":26701,"date":"2017-11-07T17:46:04","date_gmt":"2017-11-07T17:46:04","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2017\/11\/07\/man-charged-with-hiring-hackers-to-sabotage-former-employer\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:22:07","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:22:07","slug":"man-charged-with-hiring-hackers-to-sabotage-former-employer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/cyber\/2017\/11\/07\/man-charged-with-hiring-hackers-to-sabotage-former-employer\/","title":{"rendered":"Man charged with hiring hackers to sabotage former employer"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><br>MINNEAPOLIS (AP) \u2014 In the first Minnesota case to address a new and growing form of cybercrime, federal prosecutors have charged a man with paying computer hackers to sabotage websites affiliated with his former employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The FBI says the case represents a growing form of cybercrime in which professional hackers are paid to inflict damage on individuals, businesses and others who rely on digital devices connected to the web.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Prosecutors say 46-year-old John Kelsey Gammell hired hackers to bring down Washburn Computer Group in in Monticello, but also made monthly payments between July 2015 and September 2016 to damage web networks connected to the Minnesota Judicial Branch, Hennepin County and several banks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.startribune.com\/hacker-for-hire-cases-going-federal-in-minnesota\/455624163\/\">The Star Tribune<\/a> reports Gammell\u2019s attorney, Rachel Paulose, has argued her client didn\u2019t personally attack Washburn. Paulose has asked a federal magistrate to throw out evidence the FBI obtained from an unnamed researcher because that data could have been obtained by hacking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe government has failed to charge a single one of those \u2018cyber hit men\u2019 services, named and evidently well known to the government,\u201d Paulose said. \u201cInstead the government\u2019s neglect has allowed the professional cyber hit men for hire to skip off merrily into the night.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Washburn attacks were \u201cessentially a prank on a dormant site not doing business,\u201d Paulose said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs a society that is increasingly reliant on network-connected devices, these types of cyberattacks pose a serious threat to individuals, businesses, and even our nation\u2019s critical infrastructure,\u201d said acting U.S. Attorney Gregory Brooker in Minneapolis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State networks get an average of more than 3 million attempted cyberattacks daily, according to Minnesota IT Services, which administers the state\u2019s computer systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cA lot of people think it\u2019s just a nuisance,\u201d said Chris Buse, Minnesota\u2019s chief information security officer. \u201cBut it\u2019s not. If you look at what government does \u2014 basic critical services \u2014 if those services don\u2019t continue, people can literally die.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p
