Each year right before the winter holidays, another celebration is observed to honor living veterans who served their country and those who died doing so, according to Encyclopedia Britannica. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Veterans Day began as Armistice Day after President Woodrow Wilson<\/a> called for celebration of the temporary pause of hostilities between the Allied forces and Germany during World War I on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence why Veterans Day, as it has become known, is always celebrated on Nov. 11, <\/a>regardless of what day of the week it falls on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cVeterans Day honors all of those who have served the country in war or peace \u2014 dead or alive \u2014 although it\u2019s largely intended to thank living veterans for their sacrifices,\u201d according to the U.S. Department of Defense. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, the 11th falls on a Saturday, which means the rules change \u2014 slightly \u2014 to give federal employees paid time off.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday, Nov. 10, will be the official observed holiday for the purposes of closing most government offices, according to the White House\u2019s Office of Personnel Management, which publishes the holiday schedule each year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t
