The <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/fbi-headquarters-maryland-virginia-9af3e4cf2b58fc6d44ccea6816bdee0c\">new building<\/a> would replace the FBI\u2019s crumbling headquarters in nearby Washington, D.C.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2023\/11\/15\/gsa-bid-to-shed-empty-federal-office-buildings-slowed-by-budget-fights\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/635624561595893236-032510ft-gsa201jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">GSA bid to shed empty federal office buildings slowed by budget fights<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">GSA plans to shed as many as 23 buildings from its portfolio to save taxpayers $1 billion over a decade.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Virginia\u2019s senators and representatives said in a joint statement that there was \u201coverwhelming evidence\u201d suggesting the process was influenced by politics and called on the GSA to pause anything related to the relocation until the review is complete.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The acting inspector general said that his office would immediately begin evaluating the GSA\u2019s process and procedures for selecting the site and share a copy of any report that results, according to a letter sent to Democratic Sen. Mark Warner of Virginia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe applaud the inspector general for moving quickly and encourage him to move forward to complete a careful and thorough review,\u201d Virginia\u2019s delegation said in a joint statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The agency said it welcomes the review and pointed out that it had already released decision-making materials and a legal review of concerns raised by the director of the FBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe carefully followed the requirements and process, and stand behind GSA\u2019s final site selection decision,\u201d an agency spokesperson said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The review comes after FBI Director Christopher Wray told staff in an internal message earlier this month that he was concerned about a \u201cpotential conflict of interest\u201d in a GSA executive choosing a site owned by a previous employer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wray said his objections were about the process rather than the site itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">GSA, which manages the government\u2019s real estate portfolio, denied any conflict. The agency said the site about 13 miles (20 kilometers) northeast of Washington was the cheapest one with the best access to public transit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maryland and Virginia have long been vying to land the FBI.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maryland\u2019s leaders applauded the Greenbelt choice, saying was \u201cnever about politics\u201d and the
