The Associated Press found<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/business-health-coronavirus-pandemic-prisons-government-and-politics-88fff925b1901a36a10581c28d826916\"> nearly a third of federal correctional officer positions were vacant<\/a> in 2021, and staffing overall has dropped 20% in the last seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The move to temporarily raise age requirements for new law enforcement hires could help expand the number of eligible candidates who apply to the bureau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usajobs.gov\/Help\/faq\/application\/eligibility\/age-limit\/\" target=\"_blank\">Age limits for certain occupations<\/a> are enforced by several federal civilian agencies to help maintain \u201ca young and vigorous workforce of individuals appointed to physically arduous law enforcement officer positions,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/jmd\/page\/file\/1446196\/download\" target=\"_blank\">2019 policy by the Justice Department. <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/management\/2022\/10\/04\/can-the-federal-government-force-an-employee-to-retire\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21176686097838.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Can the federal government force an employee to retire?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">\u201cIt\u2019s an established fact of life that more older Americans are working longer, and in larger numbers than ever before.&quot;<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, too, do law enforcement positions come with a <a href=\"http:\/\/retirement.federaltimes.com\/2013\/06\/17\/mandatory-retirement-age-3\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cforced\u201d retirement age of 57 years, <\/a>barring certain exceptions that. At the bureau, after 20 years of service, retirement eligibility is met at age 50. With 25 years of service, officers may retire at any age under the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opm.gov\/retirement-services\/fers-information\/\">Federal Employees Retirement System<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2017, the vast majority of bureau officers filed for application before the mandatory retirement age, according to a report from the Government Accountability Office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That same year, more than 100,000 officers were employed by federal executive branch agencies, mostly at the departments of Justice and Homeland Security.
