{"id":28165,"date":"2024-07-05T18:39:30","date_gmt":"2024-07-05T18:39:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2024\/07\/05\/senators-implore-va-secretary-keep-community-care-access-for-veterans\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T05:09:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T05:09:22","slug":"senators-implore-va-secretary-keep-community-care-access-for-veterans","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2024\/07\/05\/senators-implore-va-secretary-keep-community-care-access-for-veterans\/","title":{"rendered":"Senators implore VA secretary keep community care access for veterans"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The ranking member of the Senate Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee urged Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough to address a policy that he said is making it difficult for veterans to receive care, according to a June 25 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.veterans.senate.gov\/2024\/7\/sen-moran-leads-colleagues-in-urging-va-to-correct-policies-affecting-veteran-access-to-care#:~:text=WASHINGTON%2C%20D.C.%20%E2%80%93%20U.S.%20Senator%20Jerry,for%20veterans%20to%20receive%20care.\">letter<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As ranking member, Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kan., led 19 other senators who asked McDonough to ensure veterans\u2019 right to community care \u2014 a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.va.gov\/COMMUNITYCARE\/\">program<\/a> the VA utilizes to connect veterans to health care through local providers. The senators claim that a panel, dubbed the Red Team, meant to assess the reasoning behind community care\u2019s increased spending, made recommendations that are negatively impacting veterans in need of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA leaders \u2014 including yourself \u2014 addressed the Red Team and provided it with select data and briefings that contributed to the conclusion that frames community care as a potential existential threat to VA\u2019s direct care system, rather than the vital lifeline it is for veterans and for VA,\u201d the senators wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter states that the Red Team suggests the VA reduce community care referrals for veterans needing emergency, oncology or mental health care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is unconscionable that VA would consider leaving them with fewer options to seek needed care,\u201d the senators said in the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even as the Red Team\u2019s recommendations have not formally been implemented yet, the senators write they noticed a steep uptick in reports from veterans and their families, saying the suggestions are being adhered to already. The VA already canceled, revoked or denied community care for a number of veterans, according to the letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA issued a hiring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/management\/career\/2024\/02\/22\/va-to-slow-hiring-pace-after-adding-tens-of-thousands-of-jobs-in-2023\/\">pause<\/a> in February and is striving to reduce <a href=\"https:\/\/www.federaltimes.com\/veterans\/2024\/05\/07\/senators-look-to-curb-va-plans-to-trim-employee-numbers\/\">staffing<\/a> by 10,000 employees, which the letter argues will affect veterans\u2019 welfare, especially for those in need of care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The letter cites the VA\u2019s 2018 <a href=\"https:\/\/news.va.gov\/press-room\/va-launches-new-health-care-options-under-mission-act\/\">MISSION<\/a> Act, with the goal of giving veterans more options for health care access, that included the community care program, launched in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cVA must embrace both the spirit and letter of that transformational piece of legislation to ensure this does not continue,\u201d the senators said. \u201cDoing anything less is detrimental to the progress VA has made through the MISSION Act and a personal affront to veterans across the
