I am also a federal employee. I bought back my military time for leave purposes. When I get ready to retire, will I have to pay a deposit to have my 14 years applied for retirement purposes? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I am trying to see if it would be beneficial for me to waive my military time and have that added to my fed time for retirement purposes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I have seven years federal work time, after the military. From my understanding, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.crapo.senate.gov\/news\/in-the-news\/weekly-column-pressing-for-passage-of-major-richard-star-act-for-idaho-veterans#:~:text=The%20Major%20Richard%20Star%20Act%20would%20correct%20a%20severe%20injustice,and%20retirement%20pay%20without%20reduction.\" target=\"_blank\">there is a bill pending<\/a> for medical retirees to receive annuities. I\u2019m trying to wait until that is passed to determine if I will apply my 14 years towards&nbsp;retirement.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/your-career\/2024\/03\/21\/can-i-buy-back-active-duty-time-for-my-gs-retirement\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/ask_the_expert.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Can I buy back active duty time for my GS retirement?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Once you have that figure, you\u2019ll be able to decide whether it\u2019s in your best financial interest to make the deposit.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Reg\u2019s reponse:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When you made a deposit to get credit for your active duty service, you also got credit for additional civilian service time. When you retire, you\u2019ll have the option of waiving your military retired pay and having that time used in the computation of your civilian annuity <i>or<\/i> you can have it based solely on your civilian service. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If you did that, you\u2019d be entitled to a refund of your military deposit, plus accrued interest.
