{"id":28379,"date":"2018-10-30T16:46:53","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T16:46:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2018\/10\/30\/dhs-moves-to-manage-risks-to-the-american-supply-chain\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T18:23:51","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T18:23:51","slug":"dhs-moves-to-manage-risks-to-the-american-supply-chain","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/newsletters\/it-cloud-report\/2018\/10\/30\/dhs-moves-to-manage-risks-to-the-american-supply-chain\/","title":{"rendered":"DHS moves to manage risks to the American supply chain"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Department of Homeland Security has created a task force to secure U.S. technology amid concerns that the American supply chain has been infected by foreign hackers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The public-private partnership is the first information and communications supply-chain task force and will provide recommendations and manage risk regarding hacks on American computer and communications systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThreats to the nation\u2019s IT and communications supply chain can severely impact our national security and nearly every facet of our economy,\u201d Homeland Security Undersecretary Christopher Krebs said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The task force will be located in the Department of Homeland Security\u2019s National Protection and Programs Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The private-sector co-chairs are Robert Mayer, of US telecom, and John Miller, of the Information Technology Industry Council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the first meeting to take place in the coming weeks, the task-force will announce a formal membership list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">U.S. officials and industry officials said that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/dod\/2018\/10\/08\/theres-a-serious-threat-to-the-supply-chain-says-pentagon\/\" target=_blank>foreign<\/a> governments have increased their attacks on the American supply chain. Many of the hacks target firms at the end of the supply chain, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifthdomain.com\/dod\/2018\/10\/21\/pentagon-moves-to-secure-supply-chain-from-foreign-hackers\/\" target=_blank>according<\/a> to experts from Lockheed Martin, one of the prime defense contractors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPrivate industry is making supply-chain threat mitigation a big part of their corporate strategy,\u201d William Evanina, director of the National Counterintelligence and Security Center at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence told reporters Oct. 30. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou are also starting to a combination of nation-state actors being less inhibited and being more aggressive in attacking our
