{"id":28620,"date":"2022-12-13T16:32:45","date_gmt":"2022-12-13T16:32:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/12\/13\/ex-navy-head-coach-says-he-was-fired-in-locker-room-after-loss-to-army\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T20:14:52","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T20:14:52","slug":"ex-navy-head-coach-says-he-was-fired-in-locker-room-after-loss-to-army","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/fedlife\/2022\/12\/13\/ex-navy-head-coach-says-he-was-fired-in-locker-room-after-loss-to-army\/","title":{"rendered":"Ex-Navy head coach says he was fired in locker room after loss to Army"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Academy didn\u2019t wait long to fire its head football coach after losing 20-17 in double overtime against its rivals from West Point.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ken Niumatalolo, who helmed the Midshipmen for 15 seasons and became the winningest coach in Navy\u2019s program history, was reportedly sitting alone in the locker room after the game on Saturday when the school\u2019s athletic director Chet Gladchuk walked in and told him he was fired.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFirst of all, we just got kicked in the gut,\u201d Niumatalolo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/35240443\/niumatalolo-says-navy-fired-immediately-loss-army\" target=\"_blank\">told ESPN.<\/a> \u201cI was a little bit numb prior to him saying that, so most of it I couldn\u2019t comprehend. I\u2019m just like, \u2018Chet, why don\u2019t you take some time to relax.\u2019 He said, \u2018Well, it\u2019s been building up.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Naval Academy announced the decision <a href=\"https:\/\/navysports.com\/news\/2022\/12\/11\/niumatalolo-will-not-return-for-the-2023-football-season.aspx\" target=\"_blank\">in a statement<\/a> on Sunday, naming defensive coordinator Brian Newberry as the interim head coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/navysports.com\/sports\/football\/roster\/coaches\/ken-niumatalolo\/158\" target=\"_blank\">Niumatalolo<\/a> was hired as the head coach of Navy\u2019s football program before the 2008 season and earned a 109-83 overall record. During the start of his tenure at the service academy, Navy won eight consecutive times in its annual rivalry game against Army. Niumatalolo became the first coach in the school\u2019s history to win four consecutive bowl games. He also took home six Commander-In-Chief\u2019s Trophies, awarded to the winner of the series between the military academies, marking the most in the school\u2019s history.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/navytimes\/home\/2022\/12\/10\/thats-not-just-any-astronaut-on-navys-helmet-thats-navy-royalty\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/original.webp_.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">That\u2019s not just any astronaut on Navy\u2019s helmet, that\u2019s Navy royalty<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Bruce McCandless II, a U.S Naval Academy graduate, went on to serve as a naval aviator and pioneering astronaut.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Midshipmen, however, went 11-23 over their last three seasons and only had one winning season in their last five, the academy\u2019s statement said. In total, Navy is a combined 4-10 against West Point and the Air Force Academy over the last seven years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The string of recent losses, culminating in this year\u2019s defeat at the Army-Navy game, was not up to the standard set by Gladchuck, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=t-6aW5qR_24\" target=\"_blank\">said in a press conference yesterday<\/a> that his priorities are to win the Commander-In-Chief\u2019s Trophy and to earn bowl eligibility.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s been the constant bar we strive for, is to achieve those two goals, which I believe are very realistic, very reasonable and have been consistent for 20 years and so therefore this does not come as any surprise,\u201d Gladchuk said. \u201cIt\u2019s just an expectation that unfortunately fell short.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Gladchuk said during the press conference \u201cwithout any question of a doubt\u201d the expectations were communicated to Niumatalolo before the season. This decision, he said, was not one that came quickly, adding that variables like the pandemic were no longer an acceptable excuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI spoke directly to [Niumatalolo\u2019s] representatives, who asked me exactly that question,\u201d Gladchuk said. \u201cI conveyed it to him &#8230; there\u2019s no confusion with regard to what the expectations are. &#8230; They\u2019re expected.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement Monday, Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Sean Buck thanked Niumatalolo \u201cfor his service at the Naval Academy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re in the business of developing leaders here in Annapolis, and for 25 years, including 15 as head coach, Coach Ken has made a huge impact on his players and on our mission,\u201d Buck said. \u201cHe has led our football team to many successful seasons, but more importantly, he has developed resilient leaders of character for our Navy and Marine Corps. I thank Coach Niumatalolo for everything he has done for the team, the brigade, and for our institution over the years, and wish him and his family all the best in the
