Mike Waltz<\/a>, R-Fla., chairman of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/01\/25\/armed-services-committee-adds-11-members-quality-of-life-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Armed Services Committee\u2019s<\/a> panel on readiness, in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRight now, it should be the shared goal of Congress, our military leaders, and the [President Joe] Biden administration to get to the bottom of this crisis so we can ensure our military is ready for any threat our nation faces.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/10\/13\/is-the-military-too-woke-to-recruit\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/180108-M-VP563-148.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Is the military too \u2018woke\u2019 to recruit?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">There&#039;s a lack of hard information on why propensity to serve is falling, and whether there&#039;s an ideological shift in attitude toward military service.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this month, Army officials released partial results from surveys of potential recruits which indicated young adults were turning away from the service because of the demands and dangers of military life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials spoke to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-army\/2023\/02\/12\/army-sees-safety-not-wokeness-as-top-recruiting-obstacle\/\" target=\"_blank\">the Associated Press<\/a> about the general parameters of the survey (conducted in spring and summer of 2022) but declined to provide any detailed methodology or results. But they indicated to the news service that issues of diversity or inclusion policies represented only a minor factor in individuals\u2019 reluctance to consider a career in the Army.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Army was about 15,000 soldiers shy of its recruitment goal last year. Other military branches reported significant difficulty reaching their recruiting goals as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2023\/02\/12\/army-sees-safety-not-wokeness-as-top-recruiting-obstacle\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP23031060975189.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Army sees safety, not \u2018wokeness,\u2019 as top recruiting obstacle<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The Army is trying to recover from its worst recruiting year in decades, and officials say those recruiting woes are the result of traditional hurdles.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While military officials have pointed to the strengthening economy and robust job market as reasons for the shortfalls, conservative lawmakers have blamed the problem on \u201cwokeness\u201d in the ranks, a catch-all term to describe policies connected to race, gender and sexual orientation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter to Army leaders on Thursday, Waltz and Rep. Jim Banks, R-Ind., the chairman of the House Armed Services Committee\u2019s military personnel panel, asked for the release of the entire survey results, saying the findings are \u201cof great importance to the American people.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They cited a pair of polls by conservative groups that showed declining trust in the military because of over politicization of the force, saying the results directly contradict the Army\u2019s findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Banks has vowed to make the Defense Department\u2019s diversity and inclusion policies a focal point of his subcommittee\u2019s work this spring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWokeness at the Defense Department has harmed recruitment, retention and morale, wasted service members\u2019 time and taxpayer\u2019s dollars, and undermined the apolitical character of the military which is a major threat to democracy and the American way of life,\u201d he said in a statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also promised that upcoming hearings will be devoted to \u201crooting out wokeness\u201d in the military ranks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Army officials told the Associated Press that they could not release the full data sets connected to the surveys because the work was done by a private research contractor, whose licensing agreements limit the public release of some portions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Service leaders have already warned that recruiting for the current fiscal year may be even worse than fiscal 2022, with a potential shortfall of 20,000 soldiers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hearings on the topic before the House Armed
