{"id":29966,"date":"2022-07-22T02:55:39","date_gmt":"2022-07-22T02:55:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/07\/22\/former-national-security-staff-blast-trumps-actions-on-jan-6-as-harmful-to-democracy\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T13:00:28","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T13:00:28","slug":"former-national-security-staff-blast-trumps-actions-on-jan-6-as-harmful-to-democracy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2022\/07\/22\/former-national-security-staff-blast-trumps-actions-on-jan-6-as-harmful-to-democracy\/","title":{"rendered":"Former national security staff blast Trump\u2019s actions on Jan. 6 as harmful to democracy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">President Donald Trump\u2019s decision to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/10\/pence-not-trump-asked-guard-troops-to-help-defend-capitol-on-jan-6-panel-says\/?contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fpentagon-congress%22%2C%22from%22%3A145%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" target=\"_blank\">ignore defense officials<\/a> and encourage rioters during the attack on the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, undermined both his standing as commander-in-chief and American democracy, former administration officials testified on Thursday night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur national security was harmed in a different way by the sixth of January, and that is that it emboldened our enemies by helping give them ammunition to feed a narrative that our system of government doesn\u2019t work, and that the United States is in decline,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defensenews.com\/pentagon\/2021\/01\/08\/a-top-trump-adviser-on-the-middle-east-to-step-down-following-riot\/\" target=\"_blank\">former Deputy National Security Advisor Matthew Pottinger<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI heard from a lot of friends in Europe, in Asia, allies and supporters that they were concerned about the health of our democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least four individuals died in the violence on Capitol Hill that day, and hundreds of Capitol Police officers suffered injuries as thousands of Trump supporters attempted to disrupt certification of the 2020 president election results by lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/10\/pence-not-trump-asked-guard-troops-to-help-defend-capitol-on-jan-6-panel-says\/?contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fnews%2Fpentagon-congress%22%2C%22from%22%3A145%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D&#038;contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Pence \u2014 not Trump \u2014 asked Guard troops to help defend Capitol on Jan. 6, panel says<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thursday\u2019s primetime event \u2014 the eighth public hearing held by the committee \u2014 focused on the hours between Trump\u2019s speech rallying his supporters in the early afternoon on Jan. 6 and his social media video in the early evening telling them to return home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump has repeatedly insisted that he did not encourage the crowd to violence and made efforts to send National Guard troops to help secure Capitol Hill from the thousands of rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But committee members said they have found no evidence to support those claims that he contacted the military during those hours. White House phone logs and other records have a three-hour gap. Senior officials who testified to the panel said they never saw any such action from the commander-in-chief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe have confirmed in numerous interviews with senior law enforcement, military leaders, Vice President Pence and his staff, and DC government officials \u2014 none of them heard from President Trump that day,\u201d said Rep. Elanie Luria, D-Va., one of the members of the special House committee investigating the attempted insurrection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe did not call to issue orders. He did not call to offer assistance \u2026 the president didn\u2019t make any efforts to quell the attack.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pottinger said as the day unfolded, he had hoped that the president would intervene to calm or quell the violence. Instead, as Trump issued a mid-afternoon tweet appearing to support it, Pottinger said he made the decision to resign his administration job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI simply didn\u2019t want to be associated with the events that were unfolding at the Capitol,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Mark Milley, in recorded testimony, said that Trump did not contact him during the attack, but Pence did. Several thousand National Guard troops were eventually deployed to help clear the halls of Congress, but only after lengthy conversation among government officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Vice President] Mike Pence was very animated, very direct: \u2018Get the military down here, put down this situation,\u2019\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In contrast, former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows contacted Milley amid the attack to discuss \u201cpolitics, politics, politics,\u201d Milley said, and concerns that Pence was being seen as overriding Trump\u2019s wishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee also showed video of Senate leaders \u2014 including then Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. \u2014 speaking directly with then acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller to plan their return to the Senate chamber, instead of working with the White House on security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier in the day, a group of seven former senior military officials in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/07\/21\/opinion\/january-6-trump-military.html\" target=\"_blank\">an op-ed for the New York Times<\/a> blasted Trump for failing to act as commander-in-chief during one of the country\u2019s darkest moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe president\u2019s dereliction of duty on Jan. 6 tested the integrity of this historic principle as never before, endangering American lives and our democracy,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe lesson of that day is clear. Our democracy is not a given. Two Republicans are on the panel \u2014 Reps.
