In January the data firm Strava released a heat map based on user data which revealed the locations and pathways of military installations around the globe, prompting a Defense Department review.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2018\/05\/22\/new-pentagon-rules-will-limit-some-cellphone-use\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Stravaheatmap.JPG.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">New Pentagon rules will limit some cellphone use<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Defense secretary stops short of banning smart devices in the building after a security breach in January prompted a review.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new policy announced Monday is the latest effort to reduce risks to operational security based on personal electronic devices. Earlier this year, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis ordered additional security measures to keep cellphones and other electronic devices from sensitive areas within the Pentagon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe rapidly evolving market of devices, applications, and services with geolocation capabilities presents a significant risk to the Department of Defense personnel on and off duty, and to our military operations globally,\u201d the Pentagon said in a statement accompanying the new smart device policy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new policy on Fitbits and other wearable technology does not require a total ban and only affects service members at operational bases or locations. (Strava)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It also doesn\u2019t prohibit service members from having the devices with them when they deploy, as long as the geolocation services are disabled, said Army Maj. Audricia Harris, a Pentagon spokeswoman. However, each on-site commander, whether aboard a ship or at a forward-deployed base, will have final say as to what gadgets they will allow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In some cases,
