{"id":30246,"date":"2021-09-27T14:55:23","date_gmt":"2021-09-27T14:55:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2021\/09\/27\/former-va-employee-sentenced-for-hiding-camera-in-restroom\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:48:36","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:48:36","slug":"former-va-employee-sentenced-for-hiding-camera-in-restroom","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2021\/09\/27\/former-va-employee-sentenced-for-hiding-camera-in-restroom\/","title":{"rendered":"Former VA employee sentenced for hiding camera in restroom"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A former employee of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/24\/a-va-hospital-barred-a-veterans-service-dog-after-the-vets-suicide-it-changed-its-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department<\/a> of Veterans Affairs was sentenced to four months in jail for using a hidden camera to record his co-workers as they used the bathroom at the Pensacola <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/22\/thousands-of-caregivers-may-lose-monthly-stipends-under-new-va-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA<\/a> Joint <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2021\/09\/24\/lack-of-oversight-caused-va-to-overspend-by-tens-of-millions-on-prosthetics-watchdog\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ambulatory<\/a> Care Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Department of Veterans Affairs Police and the Department of Veterans Affairs Office of the Inspector General are to be commended for their investigation of this crime,\u201d Jason R. Coody, Acting United States Attorney for the Northern District of Florida, said in a release. \u201cThe defendant\u2019s actions were a direct affront to his co-workers\u2019 expectation of privacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Friday, the Department of Justice announced that Robert Sampson, 52, of Gulf Breeze, Florida, was sentenced to four months in jail, plus an additional year of supervised release for the charges of video voyeurism and disorderly conduct. Additionally, Sampson is ordered to pay $1,200 in fines and restitution to his victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Evidence presented at the sentencing hearing stated that while employed at the VA, Sampson placed a hidden camera disguised as a cellular phone charger power adapter in a restroom at the Pensacola VA Joint Ambulatory Care Center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between May 2020 and June 2020, Sampson recorded eight VA employees on approximately 17 different occasions on the hidden camera, according to prosecutors. When Sampson\u2019s co-workers discovered the recording device and notified VA Police, Sampson attempted to wrestle his co-workers for the device.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sampson later admitted that he had placed the device in the restroom to record individuals in the bathroom, and that he would watch the footage later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following his four-month jail sentence, Sampson will serve a one-year term of supervised release.
