{"id":30264,"date":"2023-02-01T16:56:40","date_gmt":"2023-02-01T16:56:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/02\/01\/va-needs-covid-accommodations-extended-before-emergency-status-ends\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:12:45","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:12:45","slug":"va-needs-covid-accommodations-extended-before-emergency-status-ends","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2023\/02\/01\/va-needs-covid-accommodations-extended-before-emergency-status-ends\/","title":{"rendered":"VA needs COVID accommodations extended before emergency status ends"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/31\/lawmakers-demand-fixes-in-va-health-records-before-any-more-rollouts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lawmakers<\/a> must extend critical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/education-transition\/2022\/12\/29\/va-to-get-new-authority-over-education-benefits-for-future-emergencies\/\" target=\"_blank\">pandemic authorities<\/a> for veterans care before formally ending the national health emergency related to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/coronavirus\/\" target=\"_blank\">COVID-19<\/a> or else risk disrupting medical services for tens of thousands of veterans, federal officials warned this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe explosion of access to medical care that has been a byproduct of the growth in telehealth services is something that has led to a lot of positive outcomes for vets,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/26\/enrollments-in-va-medical-care-spiked-after-pact-act-passage-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Secretary Denis McDonough<\/a> told reporters at a press conference on Tuesday. \u201cI want to make sure we don\u2019t lose that. It would be a real shame if we did.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later on Tuesday evening, the House voted along party lines to pass the \u201cPandemic is Over Act,\u201d which would immediately end the public health emergency status declared in 2020 by the Department of Health and Human Services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe are in a pretty good place in the pandemic,\u201d said Rep. Brett Guthrie, R-Ky., during a floor debate on the measure. \u201cCases are down dramatically from where they were the past few winters. It\u2019s long overdue for President [Joe] Biden to unwind the public health emergency.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/01\/25\/troops-booted-over-covid-vaccines-would-get-jobs-back-under-gop-plan\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"188\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/vaccine.jpg_edf8c4.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Troops booted over COVID vaccines would get jobs back under GOP plan<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The legislation would also upgrade the discharge status of some individuals.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">White House officials earlier in the week announced plans to end the national pandemic emergency on May 11, giving officials time to wind down a host of special authorities and programs put in place to ease stress on the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those include free COVID-19 tests for American families, protections for Medicaid recipients, and certain rules regarding border security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Veteran Affairs leaders said it also affects patients in the department\u2019s health care system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">About 47,000 veterans are currently having their prescriptions filled by doctors who they meet with via telehealth options, thanks to special pandemic guidelines. If the national emergency ends without those rules being codified, those patients will have to find other ways to get their medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis question of filling prescriptions across state lines is something I\u2019ve been raising with Congress \u2026 since last summer,\u201d McDonough said. \u201cWe\u2019re talking to our clinicians about it, and they\u2019re really anxious about what happens to their patients.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The end of the national emergency would also curtail some resources for homeless veterans. During a floor speech opposing the House bill, Rep. Mark Takano, D-Calif., the ranking member of the House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee, said acting too hastily on the issue could end up severely hurting veterans already struggling.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/education-transition\/2022\/12\/29\/va-to-get-new-authority-over-education-benefits-for-future-emergencies\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"157\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/5WD2GJH4LJCH5IT7BZNOHNHR5M-RESIZED.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA to get new authority over education benefits for future emergencies<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The move comes in response to problems that surfaced at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in America.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis emergency designation grants our government a number of critical flexibilities that not only allow it to work more efficiently and effectively \u2014 but are essential to supporting America\u2019s veteran population,\u201d he said. \u201cIf my Republican colleagues are so insistent on ending the public health emergency prematurely, I hope they are equally insistent on ensuring that we quickly make permanent those pandemic authorities that veterans need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation appears unlikely to advance in the Democratic-controlled Senate, but VA officials hope the public debate will spur action on extending the COVID-19 accommodations before May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Active cases of coronavirus within the VA medical system totaled 7,563 on Tuesday evening, down about 30% in the last month. Since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic in America in March 2020, more than 845,000 patients connected with the Veterans Health Administration have contracted the virus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least 24,000 \u2014 about 22 a day \u2014 have died from complications connected to the illness.
