{"id":30273,"date":"2022-10-27T15:44:06","date_gmt":"2022-10-27T15:44:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2022\/10\/27\/extremism-among-vets-needs-study-and-prevention-lawmakers-warn\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:13:16","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:13:16","slug":"extremism-among-vets-needs-study-and-prevention-lawmakers-warn","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2022\/10\/27\/extremism-among-vets-needs-study-and-prevention-lawmakers-warn\/","title":{"rendered":"Extremism among vets needs study and prevention, lawmakers warn"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Federal officials need to find new ways to study and prevent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/24\/lawmakers-spar-over-problem-of-extremism-in-the-military\/\" target=\"_blank\">extremism among veterans<\/a> before the problem becomes widespread, according to a new report released by Democratic lawmakers on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/31\/veterans-groups-community-leaders-need-to-play-a-key-role-in-countering-extremism-experts-warn\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee<\/a> on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAcknowledging the unfortunate reality that violent extremism is a small but growing threat among the U.S. veteran population does not impugn all veterans,\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/veterans.house.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/report_on_peer_support_in_preventing_domestic_violent_extremism.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"> the report states<\/a>. \u201cRather, ignoring the threat of veteran-involved violent extremism does a disservice to those who continue to support and defend the Constitution \u2026 following their military service.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report follows a series of hearings and inquiries by the committee over the last year into the issue of extremism and radicalization.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to their findings, veterans have been involved in about 10% of all domestic terrorist plots and attacks in the last seven years. Over the last 30 years, individuals with military backgrounds killed 314 individuals and injured nearly 2,000 others in violence rooted in extremist ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2021\/03\/24\/lawmakers-spar-over-problem-of-extremism-in-the-military\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21013672656985.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Lawmakers spar over problem of extremism in the military<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Democrats see the issue as a major threat to military trust. Republicans dismissed the problem as too small to warrant significant attention.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They include incidents such as the 1995 bombing of a federal building in Oklahoma City, the 1996 Olympic Park bombing in Atlanta, and the 2012 Sikh temple shooting in Wisconsin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe vast majority of the nation\u2019s approximately 18 million living veterans remain law-abiding citizens following their military service, and the vast majority of domestic violent extremist crimes are not committed by veterans,\u201d the report states,<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNevertheless, empirical evidence suggests that individuals with military backgrounds have become increasingly involved with violent extremist plots and attacks in recent years.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The issue of extremism in the military community gained public attention after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report notes that 15% of individuals charged with crimes that day have military backgrounds. Veterans and current service members make up about 7% of the U.S. population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the inclusion of that event \u2014 carried out by supporters of former President Donald Trump in an attempt to stop the certification of his 2020 election loss \u2014 has prompted accusations from Republican committee members in recent months that the extremism investigation is politically motivated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final report includes a quote from committee ranking member Rep. Mike Bost, R-Ill: \u201cFree speech must be protected, but violence cannot be tolerated. Violence has no place in our society, our politics on either side of the aisle.\u201d However, the report was released by the committee majority only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report findings call for federal agencies \u2014 including the departments of Veterans Affairs and Defense \u2014 and outside groups to fund research \u201cto better understand how, why, and how often domestic violent extremism occurs within the veteran community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link smg-interstitial-link--fallback wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.armytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/31\/veterans-groups-community-leaders-need-to-play-a-key-role-in-countering-extremism-experts-warn\/?contentFeatureId=f0fmoahPVC2AbfL-2-1-8&#038;contentQuery=%7B%22section%22%3A%22%2Fhome%22%2C%22exclude%22%3A%22%2Fveterans%22%2C%22from%22%3A5%2C%22size%22%3A10%7D\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__fallback-link\">Veterans groups, community leaders need to play a key role in countering extremism, experts warn<\/a><\/aside>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials also said that Veterans Affairs officials should train clinical and benefits staff to recognize signs of extremism or signs that an individual may be susceptible to recruiting efforts by problematic groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement accompanying the report, committee Chairman Mark Takano, D-Calif., said ignoring the issue of extremists recruiting and targeting veterans could \u201cjeopardize the strength of our democracy\u201d in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIdeologically motivated violence must be rejected by everyone in public office and it must be a bipartisan concern,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a
