{"id":30335,"date":"2023-03-20T18:55:34","date_gmt":"2023-03-20T18:55:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/03\/20\/john-wick-chapter-4-dazzles-with-spectacular-chaos-destruction\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T14:46:42","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T14:46:42","slug":"john-wick-chapter-4-dazzles-with-spectacular-chaos-destruction","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/fedlife\/lifestyle\/2023\/03\/20\/john-wick-chapter-4-dazzles-with-spectacular-chaos-destruction\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018John Wick: Chapter 4\u2032 dazzles with spectacular chaos, destruction"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What started as a one-off film a decade ago has swelled to a quartet of movies featuring some of the most brutal and beautifully choreographed scenes of violence in the history the action genre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As \u201cJohn Wick: Chapter 4\u2033 premieres, it brings with it the gut punch realization of both a conclusion to a story and a new beginning in the John Wick universe \u2014 in addition, of course, to the literal thousands of punches distributed to the abdomens of foes by the titular hero, John Wick (Keanu Reeves).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think if you look at it more as a mythological tale, like you read the \u2018Iliad,\u2019 then it becomes fun, because now it\u2019s just an adventure,\u201d director Chad Stahelski told Military Times. \u201cOn this one, we just wanted to improve the storytelling of it all, meaning we wanted to bring in more characters and see our world from different perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/off-duty\/military-culture\/2023\/03\/16\/why-well-never-know-if-john-wick-was-a-marine\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"216\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/Screen-Shot-2023-03-15-at-12.59.41-PM.png.png?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Why we\u2019ll never know if John Wick was a Marine<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">John Wick&#039;s status as a Marine Corps veteran has never been officially proven.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fourth film in the series begins right where \u201cJohn Wick: Chapter 3 \u2013 Parabellum\u201d ends, with Wick ready to bring his war against the High Table to its conclusion. This time, the adventure takes Wick, clad in his finest suit to date, on a journey far beyond the confines of New York\u2019s Continental Hotel to destinations in Japan, Germany, and ultimately, Paris.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In doing so, the John Wick universe expands beyond what was ever explored in the previous three chapters. The inclusion of the Osaka Continental breathes life into the possibility of spin-offs by introducing Koji Shimazu (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0760796\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hiroyuki Sanada<\/a>) and his daughter-turned-concierge Akira (Rina Sawayama). Then there\u2019s Mr. Nobody (Shamier Anderson), an unexpectedly lethal tracker who travels with a murderous German shepherd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Allies like Winston Scott (Ian McShane), Charon (the late Lance Reddick), and the Bowery King (Laurence Fishburne) have also returned, but their roles seem somewhat secondary to the introduction of these newer players.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, the breakout star of the film is none other than Caine (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/name\/nm0947447\/?ref_=tt_ch\" target=\"_blank\">Donnie Yen<\/a>), a blind, sword-wielding assassin who\u2019s been enlisted by the High Table\u2019s Marquis Vincent de Gramont (Bill Skarsg\u00e5rd) to put an end to Wick\u2019s tirade. It is implied that, like Shimazu, Caine and Wick have a long history of friendship \u2014 at least to the extent trained killers can develop a bond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fight scenes throughout the film are only enriched by the dynamic relationships underscoring them. While there is, of course, plenty of gratuitous gung fu deployed on nameless hordes hell-bent on collecting the bounty on Wick\u2019s head, it\u2019s the dialogue-laden, near-deadly dalliances with once-close colleagues that comprise the most compelling scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard to make a movie about the way of dying and consequence without actually showing consequences,\u201d Stahelski said. \u201cI hope we did it with expanding the storytelling ability of it all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crux of the combat occurs in the race to Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur, where Wick, armed with a single pistol, must duel to the death at dawn for his freedom. Arriving there before the sun rises proves to be his greatest challenge, one that makes for some of the most breathtaking stuntwork to ever play out on the silver screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Wick begins moving toward the church, scores of simpleton assassins launch into pursuit as a breathy French disc-jockey provides sensual commentary and hints about his whereabouts. Throughout, the fight scenes are punctuated by an on-the-nose soundtrack that, while rather corny, works to perfection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Wick eventually reaches the Arc de Triomphe, where, in a mesmerizing scene of chaos, he continues to fight hundreds of henchmen in the landmark\u2019s crowded traffic circle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNo one\u2019s really done a multiple-person fight scene in a roundabout with 200 cars,\u201d Stahelski said. \u201cNow you\u2019re not just fighting the person, you\u2019re fighting the environment as well. What\u2019s funner than moving cars?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer to that question is evidently stairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leading up to the final showdown at Sacr\u00e9-C\u0153ur, Wick must summit a mountain of stairs in one of the more fun scenes from all four of the franchise\u2019s chapters. Picture Rocky Balboa meets Jackie Chan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of silent films,\u201d Stahelski noted. \u201cIf you watch some of the things that Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd [did] back then \u2014 that\u2019s where we started with his concept. What would Buster Keaton do? Well, he\u2019d run up 1,000 steps just to fall down. That\u2019s the gag.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And so does Wick, at least until Caine, who is selected by the Marquis to carry out the duel in his stead, comes to his aid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s vital for Caine that Wick make it up those stairs. Ultimately, one of them will be released from the shackles of the High Table. The other will be dead come morning. But as old friends, they seem at peace with this. It\u2019s just business \u2014 and that\u2019s the real gut punch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the sun rises over Paris, it sets on the fourth installment of John Wick. And although there is a sense of finality at the end, there is also a spark of opportunity to build out the world of John Wick with a new generation of characters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As the hitman\u2019s tattoo says, \u201cFortis Fortuna Adiuvat,\u201d or, fortune favors the bold. The producers of John Wick certainly know how to capitalize on bold filmmaking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>\u201cJohn Wick: Chapter 4\u2033 hits theaters on March
