{"id":30373,"date":"2023-01-27T16:46:20","date_gmt":"2023-01-27T16:46:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/01\/27\/high-turnover-on-house-veterans-affairs-committee-again-this-session\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:04:22","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:04:22","slug":"high-turnover-on-house-veterans-affairs-committee-again-this-session","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2023\/01\/27\/high-turnover-on-house-veterans-affairs-committee-again-this-session\/","title":{"rendered":"High turnover on House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee again this session"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once again, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/01\/10\/republicans-name-chairmen-for-armed-services-vet-affairs-committees\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Veterans\u2019 Affairs Committee<\/a> will begin its work this year with more new members than returning ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Thirteen of the 25 representatives on the panel \u2014 charged with crafting veterans policy legislation and overseeing issues related to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/01\/26\/enrollments-in-va-medical-care-spiked-after-pact-act-passage-last-year\/\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Veterans Affairs<\/a> \u2014 did not serve on the committee last session. Of that group, 11 are freshmen members of Congress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/01\/25\/armed-services-committee-adds-11-members-quality-of-life-panel\/\" target=\"_blank\">high-profile House committees<\/a> where only a few seats may open up each new session, high turnover on the veterans committee is common. In the last seven congressional sessions, the committee has replaced more than half of its members six times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That has been a point of frustration for some advocates in the past, who say that much of their time at the start of each new session is spent educating staff on current challenges with VA and pending legislative proposals from the previous year.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/01\/10\/republicans-name-chairmen-for-armed-services-vet-affairs-committees\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1337488158.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Republicans name chairmen for Armed Services, Vet Affairs committees<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Rep. Mike Rogers will lead the military panel, while Rep. Mike Bost will lead the veterans committee.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This year, the switch of the House from Democratic to Republican control further exacerbated the issue. Under the agreement negotiated by party leaders on membership ratios, Republicans added one more seat on the committee while Democrats lost five.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In announcing this year\u2019s members, both new committee chairman Mike Bost, R-Ill., and ranking member Mark Takano, D-Calif., praised the diversity and varied experience of the members. Greg Murphy, R-N.C.;<\/li><li>Rep. Scott Franklin, R-Pa.;<\/li><li>Rep. Derrick Van Orden, R-Wisc.;<\/li><li>Rep. Morgan Luttrell, R-Texas;<\/li><li>Rep. Juan Ciscomani, R-Ariz.;<\/li><li>Rep. Eli Crane, R-Ariz.;<\/li><li>Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas;<\/li><li>Rep. Jen Kiggans, R-Va.;<\/li><li>Rep. Delia Ramirez, D-Ill.;<\/li><li>Rep. Chris Deluzio, D-Pa.;<\/li><li>Rep. Morgan McGarvey, D-Ky.;<\/li><li>Rep. Greg Landsman, D-Ohio;<\/li><li>Rep. Nikki Budzinski, D-Ill.;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee is expected to begin public hearings on policy priorities next
