{"id":30383,"date":"2023-04-14T17:20:12","date_gmt":"2023-04-14T17:20:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/14\/lawmakers-urge-harsh-punishment-for-national-security-leaks\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:16:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:16:24","slug":"lawmakers-urge-harsh-punishment-for-national-security-leaks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/federal-oversight\/2023\/04\/14\/lawmakers-urge-harsh-punishment-for-national-security-leaks\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers urge harsh punishment for national security leaks"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Key lawmakers are pushing for harsh punishment for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/14\/airman-in-pentagon-intel-leak-charged\/\" target=\"_blank\">guardsman who released a series of classified documents<\/a> online, despite some conservatives\u2019 calls for leniency for the young service member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On Friday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/13\/fbi-arrests-air-national-guardsman-in-connection-with-dod-intel-leak\/\" target=\"_blank\">Airman 1st Class Jack Teixeira<\/a> of the Massachusetts Air National Guard was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/14\/airman-in-pentagon-intel-leak-charged\/\" target=\"_blank\">formally charged with unauthorized handling of classified material<\/a>. Federal officials believe the 21-year-old was the source behind a series of classified documents leaked online in recent months, some including information on upcoming military operations in Ukraine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a statement on Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/09\/07\/partisan-attacks-on-military-hurt-force-readiness-top-senator-warns\/\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman Jack Reed<\/a>, D-R.I., blasted the guardsman\u2019s actions as \u201ca major security breach that cannot be allowed to happen again.\u201d He called for significant punishment for the crime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLeaking this trove of classified information endangered our military and intelligence professionals and undermined the security of our allies and partners,\u201d he said. \u201cAnyone with a security clearance who betrays their country by purposefully mishandling classified documents or disclosing classified materials must be held accountable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Mike Garcia, R-Calif. and a member of the House Intelligence Committee, said if the charges against Teixeira are proven true, \u201che should be tried for treason immediately.\u201d Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va. \u2014 another committee member and a former Central Intelligence Agency officer \u2014 called Teixeira\u2019s actions \u201coutrageous\u201d during an appearance on MSNBC Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\"><p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">There must be reform, accountability, and clearer penalties for individuals who mishandle classified information.<br><br>I introduced legislation with <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepMikeQuigley?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@RepMikeQuigley<\/a> to strengthen penalties and enforcement and better safeguard our national security. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/4vuRsESHec\">https:\/\/t.co\/4vuRsESHec<\/a><\/p>&mdash; Darin LaHood (@RepLaHood) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RepLaHood\/status\/1646891293849579522?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 14, 2023<\/a><\/blockquote><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Teixeira\u2019s alleged offenses were downplayed by critics of U.S. involvement in the war in Ukraine. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Green, R-Ala., on social media on Friday wrote that \u201cmany are calling Jake Teixeira a hero\u201d for exposing secrets about the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She also stated that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/RepMTG\/status\/1646615867285708802?s=20\" target=\"_blank\">Teixeira \u201cis white, male,<b> <\/b>christian, and antiwar \u2014 that makes him an enemy<\/a> to the Biden regime. And he told the truth about troops being on the ground in Ukraine and a lot more.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fox News host Tucker Carlson made similar comments on his Thursday evening show, accusing senior Pentagon officials of lying about U.S. participation levels in the war and saying Teixeira is being punished because \u201ctelling the truth is the only real sin.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators have not revealed any possible motives for Teixeira posting classified documents online. Gen. Pat Ryder called the release of classified information \u201ca deliberate criminal act\u201d that warrants a significant response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lawmakers are expected to receive a classified briefing on Capitol Hill on April 19 regarding the ongoing criminal investigation into Teixeira and the potential damage caused by the public release of the documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Leaders of the congressional armed services and intelligence committees have already received some unclassified background briefings in recent days. Both House Intelligence Committee Chairman Mike Turner, R-Ohio, and ranking member Jim Himes, D-Conn., said they hope to have a public hearing on the issue in coming
