{"id":30569,"date":"2023-04-12T19:55:36","date_gmt":"2023-04-12T19:55:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/04\/12\/lawmakers-demand-answers-after-priests-booted-from-walter-reed-campus\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:22:24","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:22:24","slug":"lawmakers-demand-answers-after-priests-booted-from-walter-reed-campus","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/govcon\/2023\/04\/12\/lawmakers-demand-answers-after-priests-booted-from-walter-reed-campus\/","title":{"rendered":"Lawmakers demand answers after priests booted from Walter Reed campus"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican lawmakers want to know why a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/10\/12\/archbishop-catholic-troops-can-refuse-covid-19-vaccine\/\" target=\"_blank\">group of Catholic priests was barred<\/a> from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.navytimes.com\/news\/your-navy\/2022\/02\/04\/no-hot-water-ac-or-doors-with-locks-for-junior-troops-forced-to-live-in-hellish-walter-reed-base-barracks\/\" target=\"_blank\">Walter Reed National Military Medical Center<\/a> just before Easter week services, leaving troops there with limited options for their religious celebrations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Clergy from Holy Name College, a <a href=\"https:\/\/hnp.org\/become-a-franciscan-friar\/\" target=\"_blank\">community of Franciscan Catholic priests and brothers<\/a> \u2013 who have worked on the military campus for nearly two decades \u2013 were told earlier this month that they would no longer be permitted access for religious services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milarch.org\/walter-reed-national-military-medical-center-terminates-catholic-pastoral-care-contract-during-holy-week\/\" target=\"_blank\">incomprehensible that essential pastoral care is taken away from the sick and the aged<\/a>,\u201d Catholic Archbishop Timothy P. Broglio of the U.S. Archdiocese for Military Services said in a statement. \u201cThis is a classic case where the adage \u2018if it is not broken, do not fix it\u2019 applies.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/www.milarch.org\/walter-reed-national-military-medical-center-terminates-catholic-pastoral-care-contract-during-holy-week\/\" target=\"_blank\"> <\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Medical center officials told Military Times the contract between the college and campus expired after military officials opted to partner with a different firm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">However, officials with the Franciscan college said in a statement that the new group \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/mackglobal.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Mack Global LLC<\/a> \u2014 does not have Catholic clergy under contract to provide services and sacraments, leaving Catholic troops without reasonable access for their religious needs. Mack Global did not respond to emailed requests for comment.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2022\/08\/23\/how-harshly-should-dod-punish-political-religious-proselytizing\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"162\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/cross.jpg_4f545a.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">How harshly should DoD punish political, religious proselytizing?<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Army Reserve Maj. Jamie Schwandt, who identified himself as an Army officer in the video, said his proclamations were not political opinions but facts.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a letter to Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin on Tuesday, a group of 11 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lankford.senate.gov\/imo\/media\/doc\/biden_administration_for_leaving_catholic_service_members_and_veterans_with_insufficient_pastoral_care_at_walter_reed.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">Republican members of Congress called the situation \u201cutterly unconscionable\u201d<\/a> for troops at the medical campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe Defense Department\u2019s actions to deny Catholic Pastoral Care from service members and veterans at Walter Reed goes against the morals, way of life, and rights that make up the fabric of our great nation,\u201d they wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walter Reed officials said in a statement provided to the Military Times that the Mack Global contract \u201cis under review to ensure it adequately supports the religious needs of our patients and beneficiaries.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Campus officials declined to provide specifics on how many troops at Walter Reed are practicing Catholics. The center does have one active-duty Army Catholic Priest assigned to the campus, providing \u201cpastoral counseling and sacramental rites,\u201d the statement said, but the U.S. Archdiocese for Military Services said he is in the process of separating from service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The medical center also said three additional Catholic priests in the Washington, D.C. region are available for assistance, and they are confident that the center has \u201csufficient resources to provide for the religious needs of our Catholic beneficiaries\u201d at the current time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But lawmakers in their letter challenged that assertion. They\u2019re asking for an official department response on what services were provided to Catholic troops over Easter week, what pastoral counseling help is currently available to troops and whether a \u201cfor-profit secular firm\u201d was the best choice for the new contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They also voiced \u201cglaring concerns about the DoD\u2019s lack of consideration for the needs of Catholic service members and veterans receiving care at Walter Reed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walter Reed officials did not say when their
