{"id":30632,"date":"2023-05-11T19:15:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-11T19:15:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/uncategorized\/2023\/05\/11\/dems-accuse-gop-lawmaker-of-condoning-white-supremacy-among-troops\/"},"modified":"2026-08-08T15:36:43","modified_gmt":"2026-08-08T15:36:43","slug":"dems-accuse-gop-lawmaker-of-condoning-white-supremacy-among-troops","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/federaltimes\/congress\/2023\/05\/11\/dems-accuse-gop-lawmaker-of-condoning-white-supremacy-among-troops\/","title":{"rendered":"Dems accuse GOP lawmaker of condoning white supremacy among troops"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Controversy over a Republican senator\u2019s comments appearing to support white nationalists in the military are again exposing Republican lawmakers\u2019 lingering anger over the Defense Department\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2021\/03\/22\/some-troops-disappointed-by-check-the-block-extremism-stand-downs-others-laud-commanders\/\" target=\"_blank\">efforts to root out extremist ideology in the ranks<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservatives have blasted Pentagon\u2019s efforts so far, which started in earnest after the January 2021 insurrection at the Capitol, decrying the training on how to spot hateful ideology as an effort to politicize the military and tarnish the public image of the armed forces. But Democratic lawmakers \u2014 and senior military officials \u2014 say teaching troops to identify and eschew extremism is necessary to prevent the few troops with radical views from poisoning the wider force with their hateful ideology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhite nationalism has no place in our armed forces and no place in any corner of American society,\u201d Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the chamber\u2019s floor Thursday. He urged Senate Republicans to make a similar public pledge, in response to controversial comments by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2023\/05\/10\/secdef-says-senate-confirmation-fight-hurts-national-security\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sen. Tommy Tuberville, R-Ala.,<\/a> earlier this week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuberville was asked if he thought white nationalists should be allowed to enlist and serve in the military.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWell, they call them that,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/wbhm.org\/2023\/tuberville-defends-hold-on-defense-nominations-says-pentagon-wrong-to-screen-out-white-nationalists\/\" target=\"_blank\">Tuberville told NPR local station WBHM in Birmingham<\/a>. \u201cI call them Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/your-military\/2021\/03\/22\/some-troops-disappointed-by-check-the-block-extremism-stand-downs-others-laud-commanders\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21050673160765.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Some troops disappointed by check-the-block extremism stand-downs, others laud commanders<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Service members told Military Times that their extremism stand-down training wasn&#039;t very effective.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schumer said any support for such extremist views in the ranks is \u201cutterly revolting,\u201d but Tuberville\u2019s office said the quotes have been taken out of context, insisting in a statement that the Republican senator \u201cwas being skeptical of the notion that there are white nationalists in the military, not that he believes they should be in the military.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Tuberville, and many GOP colleagues, have criticized the Defense Department\u2019s 2021 extremism \u201cstand-down,\u201d a military-wide training on the potential signs and dangers of extremist ideology. Critics said the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/10\/the-diversity-bogeyman-is-the-us-too-woke-to-wage-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">training \u2013 part of diversity, equity and inclusion education embraced by the Biden administration \u2013 wasted troops\u2019 valuable time<\/a>, while military leaders said it amounted to only a few hours of extra work for each individual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Schumer delivered his Senate speech on Thursday, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/10\/the-diversity-bogeyman-is-the-us-too-woke-to-wage-war\/\" target=\"_blank\">House Armed Services Committee member Rep. Mike Waltz, R-Fla<\/a>., introduced legislation which \u201cprohibits the use of appropriated funds to investigate extremism in the military\u201d and would require an audit of all diversity programs currently active across the services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The measure is sure to be a key point of contention in the committee\u2019s upcoming debate over the annual defense authorization bill, expected to be drafted next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters of the Defense Department training and the broader anti-extremism efforts point to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home\/left-column\/2023\/05\/08\/texas-mall-shooter-failed-army-infantry-training-over-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">recurring issues of violent ideology among individuals linked to the military<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For example, in the eight months following the mandated stand-down, defense officials reported 100 cases of servicemembers engaging in prohibited acts of extremism, according to committee documents.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/your-military\/2023\/04\/14\/airman-in-pentagon-intel-leak-charged\/\" target=\"_blank\">National Guardsman Jack Teixeira, 21, was arrested for leaking online classified documents<\/a> related to U.S. support to Ukraine and other foreign allies. <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/leaked-documents-pentagon-justice-department-suspect-teixeira-3e1a40c7013da229c17d668b9be5f3de\" target=\"_blank\">The Associated Press <\/a>reported that the airman frequently posted racist and violent comments in online chat rooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/flashpoints\/extremism-disinformation\/2023\/05\/08\/texas-mall-shooter-failed-army-infantry-training-over-mental-health\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"217\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP23126814942551.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">FBI probes how failed soldier turned Texas mall shooter<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The suspect in the deadly shooting at a Texas outlet mall was discharged from the U.S. Army in 2008.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And only days ago, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/home\/left-column\/2023\/05\/08\/texas-mall-shooter-failed-army-infantry-training-over-mental-health\/\" target=\"_blank\">a Texas man who years ago was booted after only three months of Army basic training<\/a>, gunned down eight people in an attack investigators believe may have been spurred by his racist and pro-Nazi views.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the wake of the <a href=\"https:\/\/globalextremism.org\/post\/garcia-extremist-posts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Texas attack, members of the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism<\/a> are meeting with lawmakers, urging them to adopt the group\u2019s recommendations to address extremism in the military, co-founder Wendy Via told the Military Times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The group proposed about a dozen measures it wants the Pentagon to implement, including bolstering its tattoo database to keep watch for hateful insignia,<b> <\/b>investigating the social media<b> <\/b>activity of prospective recruits, and creating an intervention program for service members after they\u2019ve been forcibly removed from the military and are vulnerable targets for extremist groups. So far, the group has experienced pushback in Congress, Via said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere should be more opportunity for members of the military to have this kind of extremist training, just like they have sexual assault training,\u201d Via said. \u201cJust because they have sexual assault training doesn\u2019t mean that every member of the military is prone to commit sexual violence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><b>\u201c<\/b>Nor is training about extremism meant to say that every member of the military is racist.\u201d<b> <\/b>But Via said that\u2019s what lawmakers are saying of the training, \u201cin order to justify their refusal to address any kind of white supremacy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><i>This story was produced in partnership with&nbsp;<\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mvj.network\/\"><i>Military Veterans in Journalism<\/i><\/a><i>.
