The bad news is that there\u2019s not enough staff to handle the deluge in claims, even as the Veterans Affairs has added more employees. And that\u2019s a recipe for burnout.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI am concerned about ensuring we take care of our employees, because when we take care of them, they can take care of veterans,\u201d said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/04\/26\/va-gets-new-benefits-chief-after-two-years-of-waiting\/\" target=\"_blank\">VA Under Secretary for Benefits Joshua Jacobs<\/a> at a press conference on April 27. \u201cSo we are actively looking at making sure we are providing the support our employees need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2022\/03\/23\/va-claims-backlog-improves-but-still-sits-far-above-pre-pandemic-levels\/\" target=\"_blank\">backlog of benefits claims<\/a> has been a major focus of the department and members of Congress for years, amid concerns that too many unprocessed cases could undermine faith in VA\u2019s system as individuals are forced to wait months or years for payouts.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2023\/04\/26\/va-gets-new-benefits-chief-after-two-years-of-waiting\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"210\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/JoshJacobs.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">VA gets new benefits chief after two years of waiting<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">Josh Jacobs has served as the acting benefits secretary since last summer.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2022\/11\/11\/fact-sheet-biden-harris-administration-is-supporting-americas-veterans-and-their-families-caregivers-and-survivors\/#:~:text=Under%20the%20Biden-Harris%20Administration%2C%20the%20Department%20of%20Veterans,million%20veteran%20claims%E2%80%94breaking%20the%20previous%20record%20by%2012%25.\" target=\"_blank\">Veterans Benefits Administration processed about 1.7 million claims from veterans<\/a>, its highest total ever. Jacobs said they expect to set a new record this year, in large part due to expansion of benefits under the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/08\/04\/now-that-the-pact-act-passed-how-soon-will-veterans-see-their-benefits\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Promise to Address Comprehensive Toxics Act (better known as the PACT Act)<\/a> signed into law last summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Already, 500,000 individuals have filed paperwork for PACT Act <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/burn-pits\/2022\/03\/29\/what-are-military-burn-pits-and-why-are-veterans-worried-about-them\/\" target=\"_blank\">compensation for illnesses tied to burn pit exposure in Iraq and Afghanistan<\/a>, Agent Orange conditions from service in Vietnam, and issues related to radiation exposure at various military sites in the 1970s and 1980s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jacobs said VA staff have processed about 14% more claims through mid-April than compared to the same time frame last year, with roughly the same approval rates. But new claims this year are up 31% over the same time frame last year, meaning staff isn\u2019t keeping up with the demand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">VA officials insisted the heavier caseload is a positive sign, because it means more veterans are reaching out to the department for earned benefits. But they acknowledged it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/veterans\/2023\/03\/29\/vet-agency-chief-calls-onboarding-times-for-new-hires-indefensible\/\" target=\"_blank\">increases the need for new staff hires and faster training<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department currently employs 28,000 claims staffers, its largest total ever, and up more than 1,100 in recent months because of aggressive hiring initiatives, Jacobs said. He added that recent improvements in the claims process such as automating some processing and clarifying approval rules have also helped workers improve efficiency and helped boost morale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, the department is sending out new surveys to veterans starting this week to gauge their satisfaction with the claims process, in an effort to make sure the changes and challenges aren\u2019t adding stress to disabled veterans. The 13-question survey will look at veterans\u2019 trust in the process, use of support services and other issues related to the claims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe\u2019re going to take that to drive specific improvements to the overall process,\u201d Jacobs said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those surveys should reach veterans by email in coming days,
