Austin said the move was necessary in the wake of the Supreme Court decision from June which overturned the Roe v. Wade decision, which had legalized abortion nationwide.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But on Friday, House Armed Services Committee ranking member Mike Rogers, R-Ala., called the announcement \u201ca desperate campaign tactic that undermines the core mission of our military.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rogers, who is in line to be chairman of the committee if Republicans win control of the House in the November elections, said he would demand answers on what funds were being used to promote abortion policies within the DoD instead of other military priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTaxpayer dollars meant for deterring China and other adversaries should not be squandered on campaign politics,\u201d he said in a statement. \u201cDoD must be blocked from wasting any portion of their budget on this horrendous policy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/veterans\/2022\/09\/15\/republicans-threaten-lawsuits-budget-penalties-over-va-abortion-move\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/GettyImages-1241943815.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Republicans threaten lawsuits, budget penalties over VA abortion move<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The department has said it will offer abortions in cases of rape, incest and threats to a veterans&#039; life or health.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Similarly, Senate Armed Services Committee member Rick Scott, R-Fla., accused the White House of \u201cusing the military to advance [a] radical pro-abortion agenda.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rep. Adam Smith, D-Wash., praised the Pentagon announcement as a way to \u201chelp alleviate the concerns of our servicemembers, giving them greater privacy to make highly personal health decisions and making reproductive services more accessible and affordable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He and other Democrats vowed to continue to push for more abortion access for troops
