National Guard<\/a> considered sending troops to the Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021, without permission from Defense Department leaders because of the rapidly escalating violence there. Ultimately, he opted against it because of conflicting messages from military leaders, according to a report released by congressional investigators on Thursday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The anecdote is one of dozens of revelations in the <a href=\"https:\/\/january6th.house.gov\/sites\/democrats.january6th.house.gov\/files\/Report_FinalReport_Jan6SelectCommittee.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">845-page final report<\/a> from the <a href=\"https:\/\/january6th.house.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\">January 6 Select Committee<\/a>, which earlier this month referred charges of inciting insurrection and conspiracy against former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2020\/01\/17\/trump-blasted-top-military-generals-as-a-bunch-of-dopes-and-babies-according-to-new-book\/\" target=\"_blank\">President Donald Trump<\/a> to the Department of Justice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The committee \u2014 which was boycotted by House Republicans, who decried its work as politically motivated \u2014 has been investigating the events surrounding the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.militarytimes.com\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/10\/pence-not-trump-asked-guard-troops-to-help-defend-capitol-on-jan-6-panel-says\/\" target=\"_blank\">Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol<\/a>, carried out by hundreds of Trump supporters in an effort to disrupt the certification of Joe Biden\u2019s 2020 presidential election victory.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/06\/10\/pence-not-trump-asked-guard-troops-to-help-defend-capitol-on-jan-6-panel-says\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP21116836146190.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Pence \u2014 not Trump \u2014 asked Guard troops to help defend Capitol on Jan. 6, panel says<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The accusation was among multiple findings from the panel charged with investigating the lead-up and response to the attempted insurrection.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rioters attacked Capitol police officers, smashed windows and ransacked offices throughout the Capitol complex for more than three hours. Order was restored after National Guard troops arrived on site to bolster local security personnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But debate over why it took hours for that National Guard support to arrive has been one of the focuses of the committee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The final report\u2019s authors again laid blame for that on Trump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cPresident Trump had authority and responsibility to direct deployment of the National Guard in the District of Columbia, but never gave any order to deploy the National Guard on January 6th or on any other day,\u201d they wrote. \u201cNor did he instruct any Federal law enforcement agency to assist.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As his forces waited for clear orders from the White House or Defense Department leaders on deployment to the Capitol complex, Maj. Gen. William Walker said he \u201cstrongly\u201d considered moving ahead without explicit permission because of the mountain of security concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cGuard officials located with Major General Walker at the Armory all say he seriously contemplated aloud the possibility of breaking with the chain of command,\u201d the report states. \u201c\u2018Should we just deploy now and resign tomorrow?\u2019\u201d [one officer] recalled Major General Walker bluntly putting it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c\u2018I would have done just that,\u2019 Major General Walker said, \u2018but not for those two letters.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those letters were memos sent to Walker two days earlier from acting Defense Secretary Chris Miller and Army Secretary Ryan McCarthy, putting restrictions on Guard deployments around the Capitol during the certification event because of the politics involved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Walker was eventually granted permission to send forces after a flurry of phone calls between congressional leaders and top Defense Department officials. Trump was not involved in those discussions, the report states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Almost 26,000 National Guard troops were mobilized in the weeks following the Jan. 6 attack and ahead of the Jan. 20 inauguration of President Joe Biden. As many as 5,000 remained through March of that year due to lingering security concerns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The report states that Trump did have some conversations about deploying National Guard troops on Jan. 6 with his senior staff, but that was in regards to providing security for a planned procession by Trump himself to the Capitol to challenge the certification, and not to help with the rioters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That plan was eventually nixed by senior White House advisors, who said the situation was too dangerous to consider such a parade, investigators said.<\/p>\n\n\n\t<aside class=\"smg-interstitial-link wp-block-smg-interstitial-link\">\n\t\t<a href=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/militarytimes\/news\/pentagon-congress\/2022\/10\/13\/trump-ordered-rapid-withdrawal-from-afghanistan-after-election-loss\/\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__inner\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__media\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" src=\"https:\/\/one.sightlinemg.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/AP18337607077884.jpg.jpg?w=300\" class=\"smg-interstitial-link__image wp-post-image\" alt=\"\" \/>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"smg-interstitial-link__content\">\n\t\t\t\t<span class=\"smg-interstitial-link__kicker\">Related<\/span>\n\t\t\t\t<h3 class=\"smg-interstitial-link__title\">Trump ordered rapid withdrawal from Afghanistan after election loss<\/h3>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p class=\"smg-interstitial-link__excerpt\">The memo was among the latest revelations from the congressional committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol building.<\/p>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/a>\n\t<\/aside>\n\t\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Earlier this week, a group of five Trump-supporting Republican members of Congress released their own report on the Jan. 6 failures, blaming the violence that day on \u201cleadership and law enforcement failures within the U.S. Capitol [that] left the complex vulnerable.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They stated that the select committee report \u201cdisregarded those institutional failings that exposed the Capitol to violence.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At least five people died in riots that day, including a Trump supporter shot and killed by Capitol Police. Numerous law enforcement officials were injured as the crowd surged past them to try and reach lawmakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 850 people have been charged by the
